Has the U.S. economy, historically, been better under Republican presidents or Democratic presidents?
A Republican financial analyst decided to find out.
His name? Bart Starr, Jr. (Yes, the son of THAT Bart Starr.)
The answer may surprise you.🧵

It’s infuriating when it’s practically impossible to cancel something - gym membership, magazine subscription - that was so easy to sign up for.
Seeing the FTC put an end to that is one more reason I’m thankful for the Biden-Harris administration.

it feels optimistic that we can still have this discussion out in the open on Twitter. i’ve never been part of law being formed before — it seems closer to the platonic ideal of a democracy
What's the best evidence that the bill is going to be used to go after open weights?
I know that earlier versions of the bill had a full shutdown req that's incompatible with open weights, but that's been removed. And I know that some AI safety people have expressed support for banning open weights, but I don't think that the people making decisions on what constitutes "duty of reasonable care" (regulators and courts) are those people?
The charitable read of the bill is that the (medium-term) goal is to mandate safety testing, so if during testing you discover world-threatening capabilities/behavior you would not be allowed to release the model at all.

The #1 reason why we fail to teach math: we present it as knowledge without telling kids it's a motor skill developed by practicing unseen actions in your head. Passive listening is useless, yet we never say it. We’re basically asking kids to take notes during yoga lessons.
Everyone losing their minds after the debate Thursday. Good grief. If Biden took a 4 year nap he'd still be a better choice than Trump. Hell, a piece of toast would be a better president. #betterthantrump @Timodc @jheil @SarahLongwell25

John Oliver on Project 2025 and a second Trump term.
I was going to clip this segment out into shorter sections but decided to keep it together because it's too important and, frankly, it should terrify you.
So well said. Can't nod my head in agreement any more at all of this. Also recommend all the same software, but I still also use FCP and iMovie.
First Adobe changed their Terms to give themselves a permanent license to any content you produce using their software.
Then they pretended it was a misunderstanding.
Then Adobe gaslit people who pointed out that they are full of BS.
Then they put out damage limitation statements that mean nothing.
I have cancelled Adobe and so should you if you are a creator who has a backbone.
Here is what I have done:
1. Premiere Pro -> Davinci Resolve
This is an upgrade. The software is less clunky and actually works better.
Integration with hardware is better.
No licences. No monthly payments.
I bought the Speed Editor Keyboard that comes with a Resolve license - absolute bargain of a deal.
2. Photoshop -> Affinity Photo
This is also an upgrade. After an hour of getting used to it, Affinity software actually works better.
Image editing and my YouTube workflow are better.
3. Illustrator -> Affinity Designer
Same as above - actually very good software.

In the last few years Adobe’s competitors have caught up with and overtaken Adobe.
I was blind to how good the alternatives have become, using Adobe stuff because I was a creature of habit.
Would very strongly recommend trying the alternatives out.
You might surprise yourself… And save a boatload of cash.

Isaac Asimov - 44 years ago. Never gets old, it seems.
“There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'”
