I'm sure you've seen the thousands of ads about gassing pigs or lice-infected salmon that now plaster the tube. They're costing £400,000 every few weeks. So who's paying for it? And how does it relate to a strange Silicon Valley movement fixated on AI? the-londoner.co.uk/tube-ads-…

Nearly every phone and computer on Earth relies on one plain-text file to know what time it is. When a country changes its clocks with a few weeks’ notice, or Morocco pauses daylight saving for Ramadan, someone has to update that file. Since 02005, that someone has been Paul Eggert, a computer science professor at UCLA, who does it as a volunteer.  Take a look at this great data visualization to see the full story:  na2.hubs.ly/H08qtQC0

New paper! Science is constrained by physical and economic bottlenecks such as hypothesis testing, especially as many discoveries involve long chains of smaller steps and hypotheses, each requiring validation. As the marginal cost of hypothesis generation goes down, the physical validation cost is likely to remain inelastic in the absence of major investments in scientific infrastructure. Autonomous science is therefore not merely a question of raw capabilities - the allocation of limited validation capacity matters just as much. We argue that this will require deliberately designed markets and institutions, both to allocate scarce validation capacity to the most valuable work and to ensure public good research isn’t crowded out. it's kind of amazing
i've started using @Framer Agent across every phase of a website project now: early layout ideas, new sections, responsiveness, QA, polish, and all the fiddly manual work that used to eat a whole afternoon. especially with the new Skills feature, as a brand designer, it's pretty cool to prototype a few visual directions for a website quickly and get back something already interactive, not a static mockup. this is a reel of layout explorations from one project. same brief, same references, several directions, all generated in one session. here's how my process looks using framer agent + skills 👇

excited to see more waterloo coverage but respectfully this piece did not hit for me. the sauce of waterloo that outsiders don't get is it's all a bunch of mr meseeks boxes when you get into a certain crowd. everyone ropes each other into thinking more ambitiously, something canada overall seems to lack. its filled with misfit kids like me who had ideas and made things and got told that was dumb or otherwise judged for being interested in things. i never got anything more than a "huh, cool I guess" when i showed my friends in toronto my side projects but at waterloo everyone was asking questions and telling me what else I should make. you can't just sit still when everyone else is moving. canadians are nice polite and fall in line, the coastal elites in america are spiky, it's in their founding story to fight and overcome the odds. the engineering coop culture feeds you to cali early, to learn what it means to fight at a startup or at least raise your ambitions to faang a 300k starting salary rather than 80k at a canadian bank. it's also small enough to cross pollinate easily. word gets around much quicker when everyone hangs out in the same 2 buildings and shawarma shops, so if @sincethestudy is building a robot, and I'm semi interested in that, i can look at him and think "why not? if he can do it why can't i do my own thing?" culture begets culture, just as a select few in silicon valley started a movement saying "this is where you need to be to make make the future", waterloo is benefitting from the same momentum. the drain happens because after grad, people's ambitions are so raised from their peers and coops that they get roped into bigger ambitions. and the capitalism is just much better at supporting these ambitions in america, especially in sf or nyc where so many top wloo grads end up. no young hungry ambitious person ever wants to take a step down, and in their internships they're alongside people from harvard stanford mit, so knowing you can stand with them why would you ever stay in canada with a 60% pay cut and a less mature capital allocation scene? that's like expecting a harvard grad to take a consulting job in cambridge instead of new york just because it's closeby. any person I know who's actively chosen to stay is because their ambitions are to make toronto/calgary/waterloo great again, not just "cali or bust" lots more about waterloo than meets the surface, and lots to do here to support the incredible people that pass through it - if anyone wants to learn more please hit me up i'd be happy to chat and point you to awesome people that deserve more love pics from the olden times:

hour 4.5 of being stuck on the runway at gatwick: my cockpit visit is a distant memory, tainted now by the pilot’s unfounded optimism, i have eaten my second (and last) green apple hi-chew, spirits are surprisingly high but could turn quickly

this week’s piece is particularly exciting, always curious to understand how technical arrangements produce knowledge. new week, new publication out now exclusively on bianjie.systems
This week we bring a very special publication! Engy El Shenawy & Federico Zurani's "From Systemic Critique to Micro-Epistemology", (link below) This essay forms part of the Master's thesis Investigative Models: Towards the Definition of an Epistemic Framework of OSINT by Engy El Shenawy and Federico Zurani. The thesis investigates how Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) produces knowledge and asks whether its investigative methods can be understood through a rigorous epistemological framework rather than solely as technical or journalistic practices. They argue that OSINT requires a new framework that extends beyond Carlo Ginzburg's evidential paradigm of interpreting traces. While Ginzburg understood evidence as material clues awaiting expert interpretation, the authors contend that digital investigations instead operate through experimental systems, drawing on Hans-Jörg Rheinberger's philosophy of science. They also critique the existing theoretical foundations of @ForensicArchi , arguing that while its Science and Technology Studies (STS) perspective successfully challenges dominant regimes of truth and centres marginalised voices, it provides insufficient criteria for evaluating the methodological reliability of individual investigations. They instead propose Rheinberger's concept of micro-epistemology as a more precise analytical framework, rather than assessing investigations primarily through ethical or political commitments, this approach examines how technical procedures, experimental configurations, and epistemic practices produce stable and reliable knowledge.

If you’re feeling hot, remember it doesn’t have to be this way! Policy is the reason why your home is so hard to cool. The good news is that we’ve invented this wonderful technology (air conditioning) that can save lives and accelerate decarbonisation. Read more here: britishprogress.org/reports/…

i’ve been thinking about this for nine months so it’s incredible to see this baby out there!
AI made flawless execution free. That's why brands are productizing the one thing they can't fully fake yet: the mess behind the work. "Making of" content is not new in marketing, but showing the highs and lows of the process, from concept to reality, is. Insiders contributor Sophia Epstein (@sophstein) shares why the process is now the product: futurecommerce.com/posts/ins…
