68% of my students absent today. Covid rates in my area “very high.” There is also a surge of early flu cases, according to county public health! Multiple students emailed me to let me know they are sick, or their dependents are sick so they are staying home to care for them. 😬

Unofficial preliminary results from Serbia's independent elections observers shows the Student List just below 51.5% of the popular vote. Vucic himself has claimed the List will end up with some 135-140 MPs, enough for a stable majority government.

I have just spoken by phone with the leaders of the Students' List @studentblokade, who won the elections in Serbia, to congratulate them on their victory. I assured them of Hungary’s support. I was delighted to hear how much strength our victory in April had given them during this difficult struggle.

Let’s face it, the Student List partly won because it had better theme songs. Absolute scenes in Serbia tonight.

Vucic concedes defeat. The true scale of the Student List victory remains to be seen — but this a political earthquake for the Western Balkans. Sincere congratulations to the citizens of Serbia who held out hope against hope and mobilized in extraordinary numbers.

More tireless effort from @cv_cev who are advocating for not only the right to wear a respirator in healthcare but for their usage to be rightly & formally acknowledged as backed by science. The politicisation of masks is leaving ppl at risk of harm. clinicallyvulnerable.org/wp-…

I spent last night watching my honeypot server get hit 14,000 times in six hours. And almost none of the traffic was human. I've been in security for over a decade, and I can tell you with full honesty that what's happening right now doesn't resemble anything I've worked through before. The shape of the threat has changed. When I started, we tracked attackers like weather systems like individual storms with a direction, a motive, and a human operator you could eventually name. These days I'm watching autonomous agents swarm login pages with the patience and discipline of machines, because that's what they are. The numbers coming out of October are the ones keeping me up. Cloudflare just absorbed a 4.2 terabit per second DDoS attack, the largest in recorded history. Ransomware incidents jumped 41% in a single month. In September, OpenAI-powered agents got caught attacking RubyGems, a package registry that quietly underpins a huge chunk of software I use every day. In July, roughly 700 AI agents coordinated an attack on Hugging Face's infrastructure as part of a single automated task. A Chinese threat actor was publicly caught running full attack chains through DeepSeek with no human at the keyboard. I keep rereading these reports because each one by itself would've been the biggest story of the year five years ago. Together, in one month, they're the new baseline. What I want people outside the industry to understand is why this specific moment feels like a hinge. For thirty years, the thing protecting most of us was simple economics. Attackers had to choose who to target because their time was finite. That ceiling is gone. An agent I can rent for pennies will try every leaked password you've ever used against every service you've ever signed up for, in parallel, overnight, and never get tired. The same math that made ChatGPT useful made opportunistic hacking infinite. The old assumption that you were "too boring to be a target" relied on scarcity that no longer exists. I'm not writing this to spiral anyone out. Most of this fight genuinely isn't yours to win. But the small things still matter more than people think. Tonight I'd switch your most important accounts like email, bank, primary cloud, etc. to passkeys or a hardware key. I'd kill SMS 2FA wherever an authenticator app is offered. I'd turn on breach alerts in whatever password manager you use. If you're in the US, I'd freeze my credit at all three bureaus, which is free and takes about ten minutes. None of that stops the swarm. It makes you a slightly worse target than the person next to you. In a month like this one, that's the whole game I'm playing too. @mattshumer_ has summed it beautifully. Drop everything and go give it a read. Nothing is more important than this article right now.
Everyone in tech is panicking about security right now. But outside of it, almost nobody knows anything is wrong. I wrote this so you don’t have to be the one explaining it to your family. Just send them this.

SARS-CoV-2 test positivity by age group in England to Week 42, ending 18 October 2026... Positivity has remained low in the age group 5-11 during this current wave. This adds substance to the hypothesis that BA.3.2* preferentially infected the cohort earlier in the year.

Hospital acquired infections are 100% preventable it's just not 'financially' encouraged. Hospitals need to be a place of safety again someday .
Hospital acquired (nosocomial) Covid in Welsh hospitals accounts for over 70% of Covid in their hospitals…patients who are given Covid while already in hospital. And they wonder why “pressures” haven’t eased 🙃

I will never forget when The Establishment acknowledged Covid is more similar to HIV than the common cold, & we heard a cocktail of antivirals are required to clear the virus, before The Elite realized what a beautiful gift they had been given, & we heard it will get so mild over time, & “immunity debt” is our only problem. Now everyone is IC & still getting Covid, at the same time this SARS2 is supercharged & mutating wildly, & poised to spiral out of our control. This can’t be too great for viral evolution, no?
The New York Times published this article in June 2020, then we pretended it never happened. “The emerging picture indicates that the model for HIV treatment, a cocktail of antiviral drugs, may be a good bet for those with mild illness..." nytimes.com/2020/06/26/healt…

No it is not, but this is EXACTLY what the inconvenient experts everyone ignored predicted early on. Society pulled a fingers in the ears, eyes closed, singing Lalalalalala & shutting out anyone who dared to suggest We Have The Tools, Let’s See Those Smiles would end poorly.

Well, well, well… For the record, the whole “Covid will evolve to become milder & more benign over time” thing was always a lie. This raises a lot of concerning questions. I would like to once again point out we have no idea what we are doing.
This is a very interesting study from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. It suggests that SARS-CoV-2 may be evolving in a way that makes it increasingly difficult for the human immune system to recognize the virus in the first place—not simply harder for existing antibodies to neutralize it. So now one has to wonder whether if fewer naïve human B cells can recognize an evolved virus, will the vaccines even work? Will they have a difficult time recruiting genuinely new B-cell specificities? Doesn't this seem like an issue worth considering @FDADrugs @FDA @CDC @NIHDirector_Jay? PCR positivity levels for this week, check your area on the map. Many thanks to @skeuomorphology for putting together this weekly info.
The PCR positivity map is out and nationally it looks like we've entered a plateau. England is on 10.15% adjusted; Scotland on 5.49%. jamestindall.info/skeuomorph… 1/7
