George Harrison lost in the song at the Concert for Bangladesh, Madison Square Garden, New York, on August 1, 1971, with Om symbols stitched on the lapels of his white suit.
George and his friend Ravi Shankar organised two shows that day to raise money for refugees from the war in Bangladesh. Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan opened with Indian classical music, and then George brought out a band nobody could have dreamed of a year earlier: Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Leon Russell and Badfinger. It was the first benefit concert on that scale, and the gate alone raised close to $250,000 for relief administered by UNICEF. A three-record live album and a concert film followed. George passed away on November 29, 2001.
🎸 The two Concert for Bangladesh shows drew 40,000 people to Madison Square Garden. Would you have wanted a ticket? 🎸
