People will really be like "you believe in zoning reform? that pales in effectiveness to my strategy, maladaptive violent daydreaming" and then maladaptively have violent daydreams

I'm always saying this
Daily statistics reminder: you are assuming independence somewhere. It’s a very powerful assumption and I doubt statistics as a field could exist without it. However, that assumption is likely far more concerning than any choice of marginal distribution (eg Gaussian)

Remember, only the Nobel prize in economics is actually associated with the Sveriges Riksbank, the others in categories like "medicine" and "peace" have NO affiliation with the Swedish central bank at all.

"Britain partitioned Cyprus". Erm what.
No, as Muslims don’t claim to be an ethnic group or people, but Pakistan is a state that prioritizes religion, not ethnicity, over equal rights and I’m opposed to that as well, and have written and spoken before about the discrimination against Pakistani Shias, Christians and, especially, Ahmadis. I also think all of the ridiculous, divide-and-rule, British-led partitions of the postwar era, from the Middle East to the subcontinent to even Cyprus, to an extent, were a cynical disaster, obviously. Now, your desperate whataboutism and deflections aside, do you accept that Israel is an ethno-national state, because the Jewish nation-state law explicitly says “the right to exercise national self-determination in the State of Israel is unique to the Jewish people” - not to the millions of Palestinians who live there. There are multiple laws and land quotas that privilege Jewish citizens above Palestinians citizens. So maybe, Dan, stick to internal Tory party politics for your Mail gossip columns and don’t make sweeping statements about big subjects you’ve never ever researched or even read a book about. en.wikisource.org/wiki/Full_…

Britain never partitioned Cyprus. The 1960 Zurich-London agreements established a power-sharing republic between Greek and Turkish Cypriots. The 1974 division followed Turkey’s invasion after a Greek junta-backed coup aimed at enosis. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_o…

there's the theory that BBC started out making such great television because everyone involved was innocent of television. They had grown up reading, they had come from theatre, scholarship, and so on. As the time before television recedes, television itself deteriorates.

The left and right across the West show little sign of slowing down their arms race to innovate on bad ideas.
Germany's Die Linke won last month's Berlin election on a pledge to socialize ~220k flats owned by large landlords. A thread on why housing expropriation is a successful campaign promise, how Berlin's flats became an asset class, and what expropriation would do. 🧵
