Britain’s mobile phone network is really unfit for purpose. Particularly when doing what a MOBILE network is supposed to do — moving!
I’m on @EE which is supposed to have the best coverage in U.K. - it’s awful!
This isn’t an inherent problem with 5G. Other countries have deployed the same technology far more successfully. Opensignal ranks Britain LAST among 29 European markets for mobile network performance. Denmark achieves 226 Mbps average download speeds against Britain’s 84 Mbps.
So what went wrong?
5G typically uses higher frequencies than legacy networks, with shorter effective range and poorer penetration into buildings and vehicles. Reliable coverage therefore requires sufficient mast density, capacity and overlapping cells to maintain connectivity during handovers.
Britain hasn’t invested adequately in that infrastructure. Much of our 5G still depends on 4G architecture, while the closure of 3G has removed a legacy fallback. Add network congestion, patchy rural coverage and unreliable handovers, and the result is familiar: phones displaying 5G but unable to transfer data, connections disappearing on motorways and trains, and calls dropping mid-conversation.
And where is @Ofcom?
It proudly reports 99%+ outdoor 4G premises coverage. But that figure is based on predicted signal strength, NOT independently verified, continuous connectivity. Indeed, Ofcom’s own figures show that only 84% of UK landmass has predicted good 4G coverage from all operators.
A signal at a stationary address is not the same as a usable connection travelling at 70 mph.
Ofcom has overseen the transition to 5G and the retirement of 3G without ensuring that network resilience, capacity and reliable handovers meet the needs of mobile users.
Why aren’t operators required to demonstrate real-world connectivity along roads and railways, with published measurements of dropped calls, failed handovers and data interruptions?
We have confused the availability of a technology with the delivery of a service.
A mobile network that cannot reliably maintain a connection while mobile is fundamentally failing its purpose.
Ofcom should be held accountable.

UK’s new insane EV tax (eVED) from 2028: Pay 3p per mile… but first tell the government exactly how far you drive. Submit your odometer reading + yearly estimate to DVLA.
They cross-check it with MOT data. Optional car connectivity can auto-report it for you. Distance only, they say, “no tracking”. Still means the state now logs your annual mileage as a tax record. Replacing fuel duty by turning every EV into a self-reporting meter.
As of 13 October 2026: 249 foreign nationals out of 2,304 total prisoners in Northern Ireland (10.8%).
Of those 249:
• Nearly 190 were on remand (awaiting trial).
• 70 were serving sentences (including 15 for murder and 3 for manslaughter).
• 16 were held post-sentence by the Home Office.
Remand vs sentenced
Earlier figures from June 2026 (also from questions by DUP MLA Michelle McIlveen) showed foreign nationals made up 17.9% of the remand population but only 5.5% of the sentenced population. The highest groups among foreign nationals on remand were Lithuanians and Poles.
This pattern is common: non-nationals are more often refused bail because of perceived flight risk, which inflates their share of the remand population. Northern Ireland already has a very high overall remand rate (frequently 40%+ of the total prison population).
Foreign nationals account for more than 10 per cent of NI’s prison population, Assembly hears, including people awaiting trial

Months after the UK designated the IRGC as a national security threat, Iran retaliated by designating the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force as terrorist organizations.
Pretty sure the Royal Navy & RAF will survive this.

The rankings page adds an overall score, strictly for fun. Please do not cite it in the chamber.

Digital ID by the backdoor as it was always intended.
Well done everyone that voted for these fuckwits
🚨BREAKING: All Britons may need ID to use social media, the UK's online safety regulator today announces
“This plan for a government ‘social media ban’ is a national ID system by the back door.
Both the government and Ofcom have admitted that children will get around the ban, which means the real effect will be normalising adults and children alike to hand over their passports just to get online.
Hundreds of thousands of people without ID, who tend to be poorer people, and many more who don’t want to risk handing their passports over to foreign tech companies will be locked out of huge parts of the internet.
The plan will kill anonymity online, whilst the UK’s culture of speech policing is reaching a crisis point. The policy is painfully misguided, an Orwellian assault on free speech and privacy, and will make children no safer at all.
The false illusion that children aren’t on social media will cause the companies to abandon all their child safety measures. The Government could be promoting meaningful safety measures and supporting parental controls that genuinely protect children - instead, they’re demanding government ID from the whole population just for uncensored internet access. It is authoritarian madness.”

Cold at Belfast Central Station. The 1am X1 to Dublin Airport never arrived. Shocking service from @Translink_NI this morning, with little to no communication for passengers who’d booked tickets. Apparently the updates weren’t running either.
