Elephants have the largest brain of any land mammal, at 4–6kg, with a complex structure.
They recognise individuals over many years, and a large cerebellum is thought to help them remember routes and water sources, knowledge passed down through generations.

There’s a reason elephants are the world’s largest land mammals!
A young bull grazes in the golden morning light of Samburu National Reserve. With an appetite to match its size, an elephant can spend up to 18 hours a day feeding, eating over 150 kg of food.

Wake-ups like this are all part of life at our research centre and we love it!

These calves trade head butts, shoves, and the odd face plant, while the adults graze nearby. Growing up in an extended family means there’s always someone to play with, and bonds that last a lifetime.
