All people of goodwill and supporters of democracy across the world are relieved to see the trumped up treason charges against Comrade Tundu Lissu collapse, following his acquittal today.
These charges should never have been brought in the first place. Lissu’s only crime was to call for basic reforms to the electoral architecture in Tanzania to guarantee a fair process. He has lost over two years of his life in custody as he fought off the charges.
We encourage Ndugu Lissu, the CHADEMA Party and all our Tanzanian brothers to take heart and remain strong in their pursuit of justice and freedom, in the knowledge that all forces of regression are usually ultimately defeated.

Repayment pressure is rising: debt due within a year hit 9.7% of GDP in FY 2025/26, from 7.5% in FY 2023/24. 21.8% of domestic Treasury bills and bonds now fall due within a year (18.7% in FY 2021/22).
