Measuring the health of a society based on the gap between the richest and poorest is fundamentally wrong. It is just a convenient way for looters to create resentment, because a gap tells you nothing about whether anyone's life got better.
Run the test. If everyone's real income doubles but the top doubles faster, the gap widens and every person on earth is better off. If the richest lose half their money and nobody else gains a dollar, the gap narrows and not one poor family is helped. A measure that calls the first a failure and the second a success is tracking envy, not wellbeing.
Then look at who we are calling poor. A household below the poverty line in America typically has electricity, running hot water, central heat, a refrigerator, a stove, a microwave, air conditioning, a television, a smartphone and a car. That phone carries the accumulated knowledge of the human race and a map of the planet. A hundred years ago no king had any of it. In 1960 most middle-class families had about half.
That is what a century of production bought, and none of it came from closing a gap. It came from men building things and selling them cheaper than the year before.
The gap gets cited because it never closes and never runs out. A permanent grievance with a permanent remedy attached, which is taking more.

The wealth gap is now at an all-time high. That's not a healthy society.

Let me tell you what Obama started. Nothing. The government takeover of medicine starts in 1965 with Medicare and Medicaid. Washington adds the DRG price-fixing system in 1983, where bureaucrats set what a hospital stay is worth. Then come the HMO mandates, certificate of need laws, the FDA's decade-long approval gauntlet, and fifty state insurance codes dictating what every policy must cover. By the time Obama signs the ACA, the government already pays about half of every health dollar in the country. He finished nothing and started nothing. He added one more floor to a structure that has been going up for sixty years.
Now look at what it costs. In 1960, before the takeover, health care runs about 5 percent of GDP and most people pay their doctor directly, out of pocket, at prices they can afford on ordinary wages. Today it is roughly 18 percent of GDP, federal health programs run $1.8 trillion a year, the largest item in the budget, and you call the result a market failure.
Under the capitalist stretch of American medicine, penicillin goes from a miracle reserved for soldiers to pennies a dose in a few years. The polio vaccine reaches every schoolchild in the country. Prices fall because producers compete for customers who pay their own bills. That is what made cures available to everyone.
Your plan is one buyer, fixed prices, and a pipeline that answers to a budget office instead of a patient. Price controls do not make medicine cheap. They make it scarce. The cures that would have reached everyone will reach no one, including the men on that stage, because a drug that is not invented saves nobody, and no one can tax his way to a pill that does not exist.

NYT Bombshell: "In the summer of 2025, a staffer for Mary Peltola, the Alaska Democrat who was eyeing a run for Senate, received unusual instructions from top campaign aides: Find as many people named Dan Sullivan in Alaska as you can... This article is based on interviews over the past two months with 12 people who participated in or were told of the plan, or were would-be candidates that the team tried to recruit. The Times also obtained dozens of text messages that provided updates on the progress of the effort."
SCOOP: Democrats have insisted they have nothing to do with the other Dan Sullivan on Alaska's Senate ballot.
But aides with the Mary Peltola campaign and DSCC were part of a monthslong secret plan to recruit him to run -- as well as other candidates.

The Top 10% of earners are why you have a job, a house to live in, a car to drive, a supercomputer in your pocket and every other service and product you enjoy.
The bottom 10% are why you have locks on your doors and taxes are so high.
That’s reality.

Ma’am…. You spent years in national security. Surely you understand the difference between intelligence, evidence, and a theory you've become emotionally attached to.
➡️ Trump publicly offered to intervene to restore Ukraine’s Starlink access. Zelenskyy confirmed it has been restored and thanked Trump.
➡️ You don’t have to agree with his approach, but Trump is a negotiator. He’s willing to use economic incentives as well as pressure to pursue a deal. There is a strategic argument.
I would expect this kind of exaggeration from someone trying to go viral on TikTok. The standards should be considerably higher from someone that touts her credentials and is serving in the US Senate.

The thing about Mao Zedong was that he was not just a dictator. He was actually a f***ing idiot to such an extent that it would make Trump’s ridiculous claims of himself being a “stable genius” almost credible.
Mao forced farmers to make steel out of farm tools and in small village furnaces, which left farmers with no tools to work the fields. He forced farmers to chase away insect-eating sparrows, which led yo locust-infested fields. Millions starved to death as a result.
He thought that turning the population on itself in endless struggle was the path to proletariat prosperity - all it had done was to make more starve to death, loss of Chinese know-how across the board and China left on the brink of bankruptcy.
His views on dental hygiene were so off the planet that he eschewed both “modern” or more traditional Chinese modes of dental care, to the point that his doctors and others all mention the rotting stench that emanated from his mouth.
Not all dictators are idiots - Deng Xiaoping was a dictator but not an idiot. But Mao excelled himself in his idiotmaxxing, more a buffoonish Idi Amin than a dangerously bright Emperor Kangxi.

When you elect leaders who have zero business acumen but are adept at "community organizing", this is what happens. First Portland, now Seattle. But San Francisco is making a comeback. You should ask why. @SeaTimesOpinion @seattletimes
Around half of Seattle businesses report that are considering moving or shrinking, blaming a business environment that they say is getting worse and don’t believe it looks like it will get better, according to a survey from the Downtown Seattle Association and Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. kiro7.com/news/local/survey-…

Armed guards at the door. Opioids offered on repeat. Apple Pay at my bedside. Welcome to the American Emergency Room.
The French think it bankrupts you. Americans think France does it for free. I’ve been to the ER in both. Both are wrong.
Mountain bike crash, dislocated and fractured shoulder. I’m French, I live in San Francisco, and I take slightly too many risks. Let’s compare.
Security
🇺🇸 Kaiser in Marin. Three armed guards and a metal detector. My phone set it off, so with my shoulder out of its socket I walked through again. And again. Then a pat-down.
🇫🇷 A couple of unarmed guys with walkie-talkies. Still not sure what they’re for.
Wait
🇺🇸 Three people in the waiting room. Seen in 15 to 30 minutes.
🇫🇷 Broken hand: packed room, 4 hours before anyone touched me.
Records
🇺🇸 Kaiser is vertically integrated. Insurer, hospital, doctors: one system. They had my file before I sat down.
🇫🇷 Every new doctor is a fresh context window. Zero history, maybe a printout from last time.
Infrastructure
🇺🇸 Small hospital, serious kit. Straight to the trauma bay: real bed, IV, vitals monitoring, ready for surgery if needed. All imaging on the spot.
🇫🇷 Broken hand: a plastic chair and a Doliprane.
Drugs
🇺🇸 Strong opioids were the default offer. I said no. They insisted. The doctor came in personally, confused why someone in that much pain would refuse. I stuck to Tylenol, an anti-inflammatory, to put the shoulder back in.
Yes, it hurt. No, I didn’t tap out. My mom is proud of me.
🇫🇷 Broken hand: Doliprane, opioids never mentioned. I have friends who got their shoulder popped back in with nothing at all.
US default: opioids. French default: Doliprane.
Bill
🇺🇸 Every nurse warned me: “You’re French, this bill is going to traumatize you.”
Before discharge, someone came to my bed to collect payment. Apple Pay, from the hospital bed. $300. For everything. On a ~$500/month Kaiser plan.
🇫🇷 A flat ~€20 ER fee, usually reimbursed by your mutuelle. The real bill shows up later, on your payslip (see below)
followup
🇺🇸 Kaiser called me right after to set up follow-up and physio, all in their system. So far, so good.
🇫🇷 Broken hand: discharged, figure it out yourself. A friend dislocated her finger. They put it back in wrong, sent her home with bad instructions, it locked up, and she needed surgery months later. Still not fixed.
“Free healthcare” in France
It’s not free when your marginal tax rate nears 70% with social charges. And if you want quality care fast, more and more people pay for private clinics anyway.
Verdict
One person, one data point. But the care was 10x better than anything I’ve had in France, for a price that’s completely fine.
France has a lot to learn.
And yes, I refused the narcotics to stay sharp enough to launch a NanoCorp from my hospital bed. Launch your first company run by an AI agent: nanocorp .so

Did you know that 81% of Somali households in Minnesota are on Welfare?
And no, it’s not just to “help them get started” here because that number is still 78% for Somalis who have been there for over 10 years.
Only 21% of native born households are getting government assistance.
Why are we bringing these people in only to be supported by our tax dollars?

One single group of Somalis in Minnesota stole more money from taxpayers than the sum total of all Somalis who have ever or will ever come to the United States combined will ever contribute to the economy.
