This is amazing - I looked for this 30 yrs ago as a student in Yorkshire but never found it, obviously. I had this feeling to go north, but not north enough! Incredible what's out there waiting to be found! @BritishBugs
A new insect for Scotland?! 🪳
A visiting ecologist to Tireragan, Mull, recently found a rare type of juniper shield bug, thought extinct in the UK in 1925. This is believed to be the first record in the UK since then, and the first ever in Scotland.

One of my favourite species seen in Greece in the summer was these trapdoor spiders - a relative of tarantulas. If lifted, the spiders assume you’re a predator so come rushing out, grab the door and yank it back down - they then hold it in place so it’s impossible to lift again!

Another query for @BritishBugs - does this look OK for female Eurygaster maura? Out of range in the Suffolk Brecks? But no gap to the side of the genital plate?

Swarming Scarabs. Thyreocoris scarabaeiodes en masse in our Yorkshire garden. The dry, sandy soil with Field Pansy, and Violets in the shadier areas, is obviously ideal habitat. A tiny species which can be difficult to spot but much easier in numbers. @BritishBugs #shieldbug

So many Shieldbugs and Squashbugs in the garden today. Amazing what a bit of warm sunshine can do. Arenocoris fallenii, Podops inuncta, Coriomerus denticulatus, 4 Zicrona caerulea, (usually something I see singly), and many, many more.

Water scorpion, Nepa cinerea. Because of the form of his front legs and the breathing tube on the back, he got this confusing trivial name. The „scorpion“ is actually a bug. The portrait reminds of extraterrestrial life from far galaxies. ⠀

Victorian entomologists like Charles Barrett often enliven their monographs with vivid descriptions of their expeditions so you feel you're right there with them on some long ago day. Here he describes an encounter with Oak Eggars in a gale
