Many thanks to all of you who have read, supported, and reviewed The Traveling Photographer's Manifesto. Starting today, it is also available as a DRM-free audiobook: the-traveling-photographer-2…
This is a damn good book about photography. It is not a how to book; it is about engaging, interacting with people and learning to feel your surroundings. @strobist is the right man to guide you. Cheers. #photography

We’re bringing the spuds back for 2026. 🎃
Did the trick-or-treat potato experiment tonight. Amongst the offered bucket of traditional candy choices: always one small potato. Result: DIFFERENT matters. Potatoes were a huge hit. Gave out at least 30 tonight. Lots of potato chatter in the neighborhood tonight, too. 🎃 🥔

The guy who invented Amazon Prime disappeared for six years. He came back this week with $250 million and a factory that turns lines of code into tiny working machines. Type different code, a different machine comes out the other end. That sounds fake. Here's why it took six years. A chip fab is the most precise factory humans have ever built, and it makes exactly one kind of thing. Flat silicon that processes information. The moment you want moving parts, multiple materials, or real 3D structure, you leave the fab for a world where getting one new device into production takes years and tens of millions of dollars. Engineers call it one product, one process. It's the reason micro-machines never got their Moore's Law. Holden's Matter Compiler kills the per-product process entirely. Features down to a few microns, no new tooling, and the system measures and corrects every step while it builds, then feeds what it learned into the next design. His first product is the tell on how sharp the strategy is. PrimeSwitch is a 150-amp relay for 800-volt power in AI data centers. It opens in roughly 50 microseconds, about 1,000x faster than a normal contactor. So the first thing to come out of a universal factory is aimed at the one market where demand is basically infinite and a faster switch means less fried hardware. Neal Stephenson wrote the Matter Compiler as fiction in 1995. Holden just shipped the first real product out of one, and it's a light switch for AI data centers.
After six years in stealth, Atomic Machines is out. Our mission: on-demand, universal command of matter. First beachhead: the Matter Compiler, an AI-native manufacturing system that builds working micro-machines from code alone. No per-product tooling. No process development. Different code, different machine.

Many of you have been tracking the Irkutsk lab situation over the last few days. I've been gathering facts and trying to understand what is happening before weighing in. Now that I have, I have to say — I'm concerned 🧵

Link to the Moscow Times, and screen shots (in Russian) in the event Russian gov't takes down this article, or edits it. My suspicion is soon the Russian gov't will deny the outbreak is plague, and/or blame something, or someone, else — as they've done in the past including with the famous anthrax outbreak at Sverdlovsk, which was blamed on contaminated meat but was really a lab leak from a biological weapons facility called Garrison 19. shorturl.at/dnn69

Inflation numbers came out today, and the official story is that inflation went down. What the headline number doesn't tell you is that the government changed how inflation is calculated in the same release. A month ago, they said July inflation was 3.7%. Today, they recalculated July with the new formula and it dropped to 3.36%. If you measure August the same way as the months before it, inflation comes out around 3.8%, which means it went up. They didn't bring inflation down, they just changed how they calculate it. Bessent did something similar with CPI last month. You only modify the way you calculate if they numbers are that bad. They genuinely thought we wouldn't notice...

Duo-Man offers the complete walkman experience on the iPhone Duo. Open the Duo to pick and 'insert' the cassette, Close the Duo to start listening. Yes, I actually recorded the button clicks and static noise from a real Walkman! It was fun making this at @bitrig hacks today.

Seen on Rednote: an AI render of what someone in China is suggesting that Nikon should make. Honestly, I think a mirrorless Nikon Z body that paid homage to the original S2/S3 series would absolutely kill.
