Glad to see China's AI safety community getting covered. Many genuinely care about frontier AI risks and want international coordination on safety. However, hawkish framing from US labs makes that work harder. Thanks @lilkuo for a thoughtful piece.

These days, "Beijing censors information" is such a fact of life that few news outlets do stories on it anymore (kudos to @lilkuo for still covering it as a standalone piece). Lives continue to be lost without the public knowing, let alone accountability. nytimes.com/2026/08/27/world…

Arjun Poudel, a Nepali journalist for the @kathmandupost, reports his own tragedy:
"I watched my village disappear in an instant...
My eldest aunt was swept away. So was her son, my dai Madhu, and his wife. My other aunt — gone too, they told me. Her grandson Sijan and his wife, caught in the same water. His own son and daughter-in-law, unreachable, unaccounted for. My maternal uncle had gone out that morning to cut grass for the cattle. He never came back."

Wu Chi-wai (胡志偉), a former leader of the main Hong Kong opposition Democratic Party, has been detained at 🇬🇧 Heathrow airport and told he is to be deported.
Wu, who was also a legislative councillor, the territory’s equivalent of an MP, for 8 years, arrived in Britain to seek asylum.
He was released from prison in Hong Kong earlier this year after serving 4 years for “subversion” under the territory’s new, Beijing-imposed national security laws.
Wu was one of the Hong Kong 47, prominent Democrats and academics who organized a “primary election” in advance of legislative council elections in 2020, the first test of the new laws introduced amid huge protests a year earlier.

Chinese harassment around Itu Aba (Taiping): right after in Taiwan's east
Chinese two vessels' first intrusion into Taiping Island's prohibited waters reflects a continuous escalation of provocations. Totally unprovokes, China is systematically harrassing Taiwan. It also proves that what China did in waters east of Taiwan should be dealt with as a challenge to international order; Japan-Philippines talks was just an excuse.

Jimmy Lai, pro-democracy publisher and founder of Apple Daily, has spent more than five years in solitary confinement for speaking truth to power. He must be immediately released.
As President Donald Trump prepares to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing this week, this is a moment to speak plainly and stand for America's values: Journalism is not a crime, and journalists should not be punished for doing their jobs.
