Yesterday I watched a vlog by this American creator. He was travelling on his jet ski from the west coast of the US, crossing all of maritime Canada, all the way to Alaska. I really like this kind of content. It makes me think about how far these people abroad push themselves, camping on islands along the entire route, repairing the ski themselves whenever something broke, and even customising half of it on their own. But what stayed with me was that throughout the whole journey, Matt depended only on the food he could find from the sea. There were many days when he got nothing to eat. Yet even in completely desolate places, alone at sea or among glaciers…he never ignored the fishing rules. Even when no one was watching. For example, one day he caught two fish but released one because his licence allowed him to keep only one of that particular species. Similarly, he carried a scale with him to measure the crabs he caught, to check whether they were large enough to keep legally for food. If they weren’t, he would put them back into the water. For me, this was remarkable, such awareness of the rules and such adherence to them, even in extreme conditions. India may one day become like foreign countries in many ways. But it may never reach this level of order among its citizens and society. This kind of morality is not a project of ten or twenty years…it is a project of lifetimes.
