In 1995 a 'vulnpocalypse' was predicted to ruin the internet, the result of automated exploit finding software called SATAN.
Its authors argued giving open access would allow defensive use to outweigh offensive use. Same debate will play out with AI.

Right after I finished watching this my wife Cathy wandered into my office. I told her "I have just watched a longish video on the history of Linux adoption that didn't mention me once."
She peered at me and said "How does that make you feel?"
"Victorious," I said. "When my crazy ideas become such conventional wisdom that my name isn't on them anymore, I won."

Nice of @IndianExpress to write the obit for an artiste who we grew up hearing about in our parha (neighbourhood) conversations with other budding artistes. Just his look was so calming and pleasing

I’m so appalled by the hatred towards her. Yes, she’s a little over the top and millennial-cringe filming herself crying, but her struggle is real. Not everyone can just reinvent themselves overnight.
If you stand to gain financially from the AI boom (founder, investor, etc) you need to work extra hard on your empathy. If you were unfortunate to be on the other side of the isle, you’d be crying too.
Of course the only practical solution is to eventually adapt. But a little crashout in the meantime is perfectly acceptable.

Our A.I. risk aversion mindset has been conditioned to be centralized and top down rather than rapid distributed risk reduction efforts.
Imagine if patching Y2K bugs required access to special software prohibited by company or government.

Hate to break it to you kids, but not saving for your retirement because you think you can predict the apocalypse is not a good life strategy and not a good indicator of your reasoning capability.
.@So8res thinks it’s more likely than not AI will wipe out humanity by 2036. How does that belief affect his choices in life? He doesn’t save for retirement, but beyond that, he says, “I sort of do what I can and then I live a good life.”
We talked through all the ways we should try to lower those odds. Watch here: youtube.com/watch?v=n8xpeNhj…

Fuck off.
This is called "closed source" and gated access. This is the exact opposite of open source.
So respectfully, please just fuck off.
Bill Gates wants powerful open-weight models to run only where the government says they can.
For any model capable of sophisticated cyber attacks, he wants safeguards and monitoring kept in by law. Developers could still use these models for free and customize them, but only on certified platforms that detect and refuse any attempt to strip out the safeguards.

I'm tired and sıck of people saying: “the book was better than the movie.” Give me a movie that was actually WAY BETTER than the book. I want to know which books were so bad that Hollywood had to save them.

That quote is from John Steinbeck’s East of Eden (1952).
Samuel Hamilton says it to Adam Trask, who has withdrawn from life after being deeply hurt.
The point is very Steinbeck: suffering can become part of your identity if you hold onto it long enough. Samuel is basically asking Adam whether he is actually healing, or whether he has started taking a kind of pride in being the tragic, wounded person in his own story. He later compares Adam’s unused life to land left “fallow” and urges him to start living again.

We've been seeing debates on what we call 'AI Slop' recently on twitter.
I've been thinking and meaning to write about this for a while. I am glad there is some pushback/debate on what we call AI slop and the norms around how much AI is 'good'.
