tell me if i'm crazy but
thinking about building a free alternative to throne. basically you’d make a wishlist, viewers send money directly through paypal/cashapp/etc with a code for the item, and you buy it yourself and mark it completed once it arrives. no platform fees or anything, completely nonprofit operation. thoughts?
i’ve had a ton of people asking questions, so i wanted to give a better idea of what i’m hoping to offer!
for anyone unfamiliar, i'm working on a free, community focused gifting platform i’m building for creators. i’m not trying to replace throne or compete with every feature other platforms offer. i just want to make something that works well for creators and the communities supporting them. selfishly, i'm building what i want to use because my experience with existing platforms hasn't been great.
i'm calling it gib (@gibagift)
here’s what gib will offer (currently, please share ideas):
free wishlists - creators can add gifts, organize their wishlists, and share everything through one simple profile link. yes, you can do this on your own, but some platforms heavily restrict posting payment options.
direct contributions - supporters can gib through services like paypal and cash app (anything you use, any country) with no percentage taken by gib.
funding goals - supporters can contribute toward an entire gift or pitch in toward something more expensive, with progress tracked on the wishlist.
verified contributions - creators confirm payments before they’re counted toward funding goals. there will also be options to flag reversed payments and suspicious activity. creators will also provide receipt verification and have a trust score based on that so buyers know they're actually contributing towards what they want.
privacy - creators won’t need to share their home addresses to receive contributions. they’ll handle purchasing their own items, rather than having gib manage shipping or fulfillment. any data you use on gib will be available to you at any time and never shared or sold, deleting your account will wipe all data.
no account required for givers - anyone can browse wishlists and gib something without registering. anonymous gifting will also be supported.
one link for everything - instead of sharing separate wishlists and payment links everywhere, creators can direct supporters to their gib profile.
creator profiles - customizable profiles with social links, wishlists, and funding progress all in one place.
discord integration - one of my biggest goals is a discord application that lets communities interact with wishlists directly from their servers. i’d love to support gift suggestions, funding updates, and shared community goals. i aim to provide a seamless discord integration. eventually, i’d like to let entire discord servers and communities create shared wishlists and work toward goals together.
creator revenue sharing - if gib grows enough to support itself through advertising (will always be non intrusive), i’d love to explore sharing some of that revenue with creators instead of keeping it all for the platform. again, the plan is to be non profit and support community initiatives with any money that comes in the future.
a few things worth knowing:
gib won’t process or hold payments, and it won’t offer the same purchasing or delivery services as throne. payments will happen through the creator’s chosen provider, so that provider’s fees and chargeback rules will still apply.
i’m not claiming that any of these ideas are new. i think there’s room to make something that brings them together in a way that feels more connected to the communities using it.
i’m building gib on my own, it’s still early, and i'm not a coding expert. some of these features are part of the initial plan, while others, especially discord integration and revenue sharing, are longer term goals.
if you’re a creator, i’d love to hear what you think! what would make something like this worth using for you? i’m interested in hearing concerns and suggestions while there’s still room to shape the platform. i might make a discord server to share development updates and eventually test the discord integration.
it feels good to gib.
