I have a project for all the compassionate folks who oppose strict school rule enforcement: rent out a large unused office building, take in the most recalcitrant rule breakers, and lavish them with your magic until they’re able to play well with others.

You know who LOVES suspensions and expulsions?
All the kid who want to learn but can’t because one kid is acting a fool

Parents: when it comes to issuing punishment for your child’s misbehavior, schools have about five different options:
1. Warning/conference
2. Detention
3. ISS or maybe Saturday school
4. Out of school suspension
5. Write a paper, research something, etc.
Most of those consequences depend on the parent. Detention needs you to pick up the child. OSS needs the child to be home. ISS barely works. And parents fight us on EVERY one of these.
HOWEVER, parents have hundreds of options for consequences and punishment. I could write a book on how to give a child a non-corporal punishment at home that works. Yet, PARENTS are NOT interested in punishing their children anymore. I think some are actually afraid of their children.
So we are left with uncontrollable students and parents who REFUSE to do anything at home to stop the behaviors. And it’s a sorry dynamic right now.

There's nothing more heartfelt than the new ass. sup. of curriculum reminiscing about their time in the classroom from the late '90s. "Back when I was a teacher, students would run to my class because they knew I would engage them in the learning process."

If the response to a student throwing a chair is to ask whether the teacher made the lesson engaging enough, I'd like to know how boring a faculty meeting has to get before the same logic applies.
This all day long. And twice on Sunday!!
Millions and millions of dollars are spent on professional development in schools, much of it an utter waste of time. Useless icebreakers, infantilizing activities for trained professionals, and endless PowerPoint presentations that offer little value.
I’m still waiting for a professional development session that actually develops me professionally.

If a student can derail a lesson in thirty seconds, but removing him requires twenty minutes of paperwork, a parent phone call, and a meeting to discuss what the teacher could have done differently, you’ve made tolerating him the sensible career choice.

For teachers, every lesson is improv.
- Do students understand the task?
- Should Mike switch seats?
- How can I explain this better?
- Who needs more time?
The creative instincts teaching demands are underrated.

The American education system is fixated on finding the latest method or system to get students reading and writing.
Unfortunately, no hack exists. Reading is sometimes dull. Writing is often hard.
You can’t entertain yourself to an education.

Schools need to put a stop to unlimited extensions on late work.
When students learn that deadlines are optional, they also learn that responsibility is optional.
It’s also a logistical nightmare for teachers.
This, all.day.long.
School is not meant to be free babysitting.
When I went to school in the 90s, kids who were disruptive were suspended and then eventually expelled.
There is zero reason to keep kids in this environment nowadays with online public school options.
The parents who don’t like this don’t seem to realize that their disruptive kid isn’t learning anything either, and that there is no reason why everyone (including their child) needs to get a subpar education.
It’s unfair for everyone.

Students need all kinds of teachers.
- The extroverts who bring energy.
- The introverts who lead with quiet thoughtfulness.
- The serious teachers who bring structure and focus.
- The silly teachers that put students in a state of relaxed alertness.
- The spontaneous teachers who model a creative spirit.
- The organized teachers who bring clarity and consistency.
Part of education is learning how to work with, learn from, and relate to people who are different from ourselves.

This is what I hear at every PD I attend:
Jargon, acronym, jargon, acronym, jargon, acronym, jargon, acronym, jargon, acronym, jargon, acronym, jargon, acronym, jargon, acronym, jargon, acronym, jargon, acronym, jargon, acronym, jargon, acronym.
Then we return to our classrooms and clutter our whiteboards, lessons, and directions with more jargon and acronyms.
And we wonder why so many students are bored and confused.
