I met and had discussions with H.E. Ambassador Guang Cong Special Envoy of the UN Secretary Geneal for the Horn of Africa. Our discussions focused on the conflict in Sudan, coming elections in South Sudan, Somalia and more importantly on the situation in Tigray. I briefed the Special Envoy on the developments that unfolded since the 23rd of September and potential role for the UN in supporting the newly established Caretaker Administration especially in areas related to strengthening rehabilitation efforts, expediting humanitarian aid and return of IDPs. I also underlined the need for the international community to be mindful of the destructive role the Regime in Asmara had and continues to have in destabilizing the entire region and Ethiopia in particular. Ambassador Cong on his part promised to do all he can for the UN to play a meaningful role in ensuring peace and stability in the region.

.@WHO is concerned by the grave risks to people's health from the conflict that is expanding across the Middle East.
The threat of nuclear facilities being impacted is especially worrying. All must be done to reduce any nuclear safety risk, which may affect people in the region.
Peace, as always, is the best medicine.

I am deeply troubled by the situation unfolding today across the Middle East. My heart goes out to the civilians trapped in the crossfire. Regardless of borders, everyone deserves to live without the threat of violence around them. Today, we urge leaders to choose the challenging path of dialogue over the senseless route of destruction. The world is watching and hoping for wisdom to prevail over weapons.
Peace is the best medicine. 🌍🕊️

Since the conflict began in Amhara region of #Ethiopia, there are disturbing reports of health workers being targeted - detained, beaten, and killed. On Feb 4, Dr. Tsegahun Sime was reportedly taken by security forces in Bahir Dar and later found dead. Hospitals have been damaged in the fighting, and aid workers have lost their lives. With internet blackouts limiting information, these incidents need urgent independent investigation. Health facilities and health workers are not a target.

Four in 10 cancer cases worldwide could be prevented.
•15% of all new cancer cases are caused by tobacco
•10% by infections
•3% by alcohol
A new @WHO study has examined 30 preventable causes, including high body mass index, physical inactivity, air pollution, ultraviolet radiation – and for the first time – nine cancer-causing infections.
For a privileged few, early detection, innovations in health products and improvement in treatment quality — including medicines and therapy techniques — is driving survival beyond 70%. For most people, cancer remains a death sentence—compounded by devastating financial hardship.
@WHO is working with governments to advance policies and equitable access to tools that protect people and families.
