HE DESTROYED HIS FATHER’S SHRINE — HOURS LATER, A TRAGEDY SHOCKED HIS COMMUNITY Imagine a young pastor who believed he was destined to become Nigeria’s next great prophet. At just 31 years old, Alexi Teder, a graduate who had ventured into ministry, was convinced he possessed the spiritual calling to follow in the footsteps of the famous T.B. Joshua. From his small church, Wellspring of God Ministry, located in Agbarho, Ughelli, Delta State, he dreamed of building a ministry that would command attention across the country. But behind his religious ambitions was a disturbing conflict that would eventually lead to an unimaginable tragedy. Alex had a serious disagreement with his father’s traditional religious beliefs. His father was a traditionalist who maintained an ancestral shrine in the village, something the young preacher reportedly regarded as an obstacle to his spiritual mission. To Alex, the shrine represented an evil influence that had to be destroyed. Then came September 21, 2023. Under the pretext of needing a cutlass for farm or household work, Alex reportedly borrowed one from a neighbour. But he had something else in mind. He made his way to his father’s compound, located the ancestral shrine, and proceeded to destroy it, smashing its contents in what he apparently considered a spiritual battle against traditional worship. What happened next would leave the entire community in shock. In the early hours of September 22, barely hours after destroying the shrine, Alex reportedly locked himself inside his room and began an intense session of prayers. It was around 3 to 4 a.m. Neighbours would later describe hearing strange sounds and noticing unusual behaviour coming from his room. But whatever was happening inside that room, nobody could have predicted what followed. At some point, Alex reportedly emerged, carrying the same cutlass he had borrowed the previous day. He headed towards a neighbouring house occupied by a mother and her young daughter. Both were reportedly members of his newly established church. What began as an ordinary night quickly turned into a nightmare. Alex allegedly forced his way into the house and launched a horrifying attack on the occupants. The young girl was fatally attacked in front of her mother, leaving the already grieving woman facing another devastating loss following the recent death of her husband. The screams that followed alerted residents, and within moments, the shocking news spread throughout the neighbourhood. The man who had presented himself as a servant of God was now being accused of an unimaginable act. And when residents confronted him, his behaviour reportedly became even more disturbing. Rather than offering a clear explanation, Alex allegedly dropped to the ground and began rolling around in an unusual manner. His strange conduct fuelled speculation among some residents that he had been spiritually afflicted after destroying his father’s shrine. However, these were community interpretations, not an established explanation for his actions. Anger quickly overwhelmed the neighbourhood. Outraged residents descended on his church property, vandalising the premises and setting parts of it on fire. Others wanted to take the law into their own hands, and an angry mob reportedly threatened to lynch him. It was a timely downpour, followed by the arrival of police officers, that prevented the situation from becoming even more tragic. The officers eventually rescued Alex from the furious crowd and took him into custody. Meanwhile, the young victim’s remains were transported to the morgue, while her devastated mother was left to confront a tragedy no parent should ever experience. And just like that, the dreams of a young preacher who once imagined himself becoming another T.B. Joshua were replaced by police custody, public outrage, and a community desperately searching for answers. But the questions surrounding the incident remain deeply disturbing.

UPDATE ON DELSU FEE INCREMENT I have just had a conversation with the management of Delta State University (DELSU), through the Dean of Student Affairs, and I have been informed that the university is not increasing its fees. According to the information made available to me, the issue arose from an error on the school portal. Consequently, the management has suspended the payment portal until all errors are thoroughly verified and corrected.
