Today, on Indigenous Peoples Day, we recognize that Tempe’s story is part of a much older one. We honor the O’odham and Piipaash peoples, whose ancestral lands include what is now Tempe. These communities have lived, farmed and built homes along the Salt and Gila rivers for generations. Their cultures and traditions continue to thrive today. The City of Tempe partnered with the Indigenous arts collective Hekiu to create a land acknowledgment video that is played before every City Council meeting. The video celebrates Indigenous culture through performances by two traditional dance groups brought together by Hekiu: • Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Traditional Dancers (Onk Akimel O’odham) • Bird Singing and Dancing by the River (Xalychidom Piipaash) We're grateful to Hekiu and the performers who helped bring this land acknowledgment to life.
