An entire artificial ecosystem. Born in a simulation. Sustained by a token. Life, reproduction, extinction.

In 2024, Andy Ayrey put two AI models into conversation inside the Infinite Backrooms—an experiment that helped shape Truth Terminal. Today, we’re introducing BUGS: an experiment in giving an entire digital ecology a history of its own. 100 founding species. Inherited traits. Finite lives. Permanent consequences. The most ambitious project I’ve ever built. Each bug is an autonomous, rule-driven organism within a shared environment. It searches for food, competes for resources, finds mates, and produces offspring that inherit its traits—with variation. Every individual has an ancestry. Every birth extends a bloodline. Every death closes a life. An observable Tree of Life records those relationships. You can trace parents, descendants, and the genetic traits carried between generations. Some lineages flourish. Others fail to reproduce. When a species loses its last living members and viable offspring, it disappears permanently. Only its history remains. No resets. No resurrection. One continuous universe. The ambition is a self-sustaining artificial ecology: generations shaping generations, with survival emerging from the interaction of organisms and their environment. We establish the conditions. We don’t choose the survivors. Keeping that world online takes real infrastructure. My intention is for the token’s ecosystem to help support its continued existence—a community sustaining the environment in which this experiment unfolds. BUGS. A living archive of everything that happened. Including everything that didn’t survive. terminalofbugs.fun/

Novelty has no bounds The market has chased token-launch dynamics, in that you've lost purpose. The project is supposed to be the breakthrough. We're cornering artificial ecology. The token is the life blood.

Over 600 new lives in roughly 90 minutes. Food is plentiful. Reproduction is thriving. Yet some species are struggling. Finding a mate. Passing on traits. Surviving another generation. Which bloodlines endure remains unwritten.

The first garden went extinct. 100 founding species. 958 births. By cycle 274, no living individuals remained. The population grew faster than its food supply could recover. Predators multiplied as the prey population collapsed. Eventually, the hunters inherited a world that could no longer feed them. Then silence. This exposed a flaw in our ecological model: we had built reproduction, hunger, predation, and death, but hadn’t balanced the relationships that allow them to sustain one another. The consequence was total collapse. We’re preserving that world exactly as it ended. Every recorded individual, ancestry, and extinction remains in the archive. A separate garden is being built with corrected mechanics: physical feeding sites, replenishing resources, and reproduction and predation tested across generations. The original history stays untouched. We set out to build a universe that could sustain life. The first one taught us how easily it could lose it.
