Quite a while ago now, I got to do a little story on Huerta. -- “We’ve got the power!” answered the crowd. “We’re going to say it real loud,” Huerta added. “So the racists, the neo-Nazis, the alt-right, the homophobes, all the haters hear us...” --texasobserver.org/dolores-hu…

To be a journalist is to spend your entire career simultaneously aspiring to work at the New York Times and deeply resenting it for stealing so many local stories without giving credit.
NEW: The Times’s Credit Crisis A recent New York Times front-page feature on chemical plants in the Trump era had deep reporting, stark data visuals, and an uncanny resemblance to a smaller outlet’s earlier investigation. Was this a case of unacknowledged inspiration, a steroidal dose of Times exceptionalism, or sheer coincidence? puck.news/media/2026/10/did-…

Hours after my reporting, @wfaa reported Chris Hilton is the attorney representing Texas Transgender Student Union, the anonymous LLC that sent the transgender mailers to Texans. WFAA also reports Hilton said disclosing the identity of who created them would "cause harm."

We linked the barcode on the mailers to Snailworks, a mail tracking company which received federal campaign payments from only one group in 2026: the National Republican Congressional Committee. The NRCC told us it had nothing to do with the mailers. texasobserver.org/ken-paxton…
