If you're seeking an alternative to this place, BlueSky is worth a try; has the feel of the early Twitter days and increasingly the range and numbers of users to make it work.

@ThomasByrneTD welcomed Belarus opposition leader @Tsihanouskaya to Ireland. Look at the responses. Not one from a recognisable account. Clearly the Ukrainians haven’t hit enough Russian data centres yet. Russian bots on here are a scourge.

Watching PMQs, strikes me once again how grateful we should be to David Cameron for closing the Europe question via a referendum once and for all.

For me, Europe began in Ireland 🇮🇪. Today at the conference in Dublin, I shared some personal memories. As a teenager, I visited Ireland several times through a programme for children affected by the Chornobyl disaster. I stayed with Henry and Marian Deane in Roscrea, County Tipperary. I learned English here, and even a little Irish. I discovered another culture. But most importantly, I discovered another way of life. I saw that people could speak freely. That they could disagree with their government without being afraid. I was too young then to understand what democracy really meant. But I could feel what freedom was. That is something you never forget. Ireland helped shape me as a person, my values and my European identity. Long before I learned about the European Union, I experienced European values through ordinary Irish people. Through a family who opened their home to a girl from Belarus. Through neighbours who treated me as one of their own. Ireland also taught me another important lesson: You can love your country, your language and your traditions while remaining open to the world.

Stop putting your Power BI images in SharePoint. 🛑 If you’re on Fabric, there’s a better way now: put the images in a lakehouse and point Power BI straight at OneLake. 🤯 Patrick walks us through: → Adding a static image from a OneLake URL → Making it dynamic with a measure, so the image changes when you pick something in a slicer ✨ → Why you should build the URL with workspace and item GUIDs, not names → The step he forgot the first time: giving viewers read access to the image folder with OneLake security No public URLs, no anonymous access. Just read access to one folder! 👏 Check out the video on YT! 👇 youtu.be/RDe9ukQV8uk

1/ The man most likely to rape a White British woman isn't on a small boat or an immigrant. He's her partner or her ex. The graph by @TheEconomist is doing rounds, and @RestoreBritain , @reformparty_uk and the rest of the circus of the self-appointed protectors of White British women think that it proves their made up point: that White British women's biggest danger is immigrant men. Well, data and facts say a different story, a story that the circus of the self-appointed protectors of White British women don't want normal people to know. Here's the data. 🧵

Ollie: Didn't you once tell me that you had an uncle? Stan: Sure I've got an uncle. Why? Ollie: Now we're getting somewhere. Is he living? Stan: No. He fell through a trap door and broke his neck Ollie: Was he building a house? Stanley: 'No, they were hanging him. #LaurelAndHardy

Best anecdote in Carol Thatcher's book about her father is when Sir Denis boarded a train at Paddington in which the only empty compartment was reserved for Rosewood Psychiatric Hospital. Denis travelled alone and in comfort as far as Reading when "all these chaps piled in", accompanied by a male nurse, who counted them before the train moved off. 'One, two, three, four ... who are you?" "I'm the Prime Minister's husband." "Six, seven, eight, nine..."

This is a big deal in Nordics, but Americans don’t react to this sort of stuff at all anymore. They have become completely numb. Social and cultural norms have ceased to exist in public life. Political elite is evaluating each others asses. It’s like last days of Rome.
WARNING: STRONG LANGUAGE President Trump escalated his invective against Norway, calling it a ‘shit house country’ and saying Norwegian immigrants are not welcome in the United States because the Nobel committee, based in the capital Oslo, has not awarded him a Peace Prize reut.rs/3U1joSt

The Supreme Court of Brazil is stealing this election for Lula. The @CIA must intervene immediately to restore democracy to the hemisphere.

There was a chap at Oxford who came up in the 80s to research the 4 year tenure of a Yorkshire bishop. He spent 40 years on it, draining an inheritance left on condition it was spent on his education. Daily Mass (sometimes several times a day), lobster every day at Brown's next to the Oratory (hence the gout), magnificent dinner parties for miscreants, oddballs and grad students, and generous to charity. His fingers were so fat that his signet rings appeared stuck to them. Having spent every last penny, he was evicted from his apartment and became a monk some 3 years ago. No wife, no kids, and I don't think the DPhil ever got finished. Top 5 most eccentric human beings I’ve met in my life. Bless him.
When I was at U Chicago we had a 53rd year PhD defense. They started a career in grad school and remained ABD until after retirement. All of our completion stats were skewed because they never officially left the program.

NATO’s U.S.-led nuclear sharing relies on B-61 gravity nuclear bombs, designed in the 1960s to stop Soviet tank divisions sprinting from East Germany. They have become increasingly obsolete in a modern war—and pose a limited threat to the Russian homeland given advances in Russian air defenses. France’s ASMP-A nuclear-tipped cruise missiles on Rafales, by contrast, are designed to strike Russia’s main cities and have a high chance of reaching their targets, creating an entirely different level of deterrence. The very nature of French nuclear doctrine and its nuclear arsenal makes it in some ways more threatening to Russia, said Nicole Grajewski, an expert on Russia and nuclear affairs at Sciences Po university in Paris. “The B-61 bombs are not instruments for war fighting, they’re pretty much instruments of political assurance,” she said. “The French nuclear arsenal, by contrast, can reach Russia.” @NicoleGrajewski wsj.com/world/europe/frances…
France’s “forward nuclear deterrence” gains shape as ten European nations join the club, aiming to deter Russia. My deep dive into what it means and how it will work at a time when Europe is increasingly uncertain that the American nuclear umbrella still exists. wsj.com/world/europe/frances…

Simon Heffer’s final pars in his review of Liz Truss’ new book. Of all the best examples of the Westminster unreality machine, where parts of the illiberal metropolitan elite and press build someone up clearly beyond their abilities, she was by far the worst. Zero accountability, of course.

Some good news! The first know #Osprey to be born in #Donegal in over 150 years fledged this Summer to untagged, unringed parents who have been migrating to the County for over 5 years so are not part of any reintroduction programme. Isn't she beautiful?

It feels like the most sensible way to see the Bayeux Tapestry is to wait for it to go back to France and visit it there.
Over 200,000 people are in the queue for the Bayeux Tapestry tickets. Bring tea and buscuits.

Colin Farrell gets barely 15 minutes of screen time in THE GENTLEMEN (2019) and walks away with the whole movie. Every second is gold.
What are the greatest “you have absolutely no idea who you’re messing with” scenes in movie history? When some arrogant punk picks a fight with the wrong person and realizes far too late that they’re completely out of their depth. The bar fight in JACK REACHER and the biker bar scene in TERMINATOR 2 are perfect examples. What other scenes belong on this list?
