Understanding Blockchain 101 You’ve probably heard the word blockchain countless times, especially when conversations about crypto come up. Let’s break it down in simple terms. • First, what is a blockchain? Imagine a digital record book where information about transactions is stored. Whenever someone sends or receives cryptocurrency, that transaction can be recorded on this digital record book. Now, imagine that instead of one person or institution keeping this record, copies are maintained across many computers connected to the network. That’s the basic idea behind blockchain. • Why is it called a blockchain? Information on a blockchain is grouped into blocks. Each block contains recorded information and is connected to the block before it, forming a continuous chain. • How does it work? Let’s use a simple example. Imagine you want to send 1 BTC to a friend. Here’s what happens: • You initiate the transaction. • The network receives the transaction request. • Network participants called nodes help verify it. • Once validated, the transaction is included in a block. • That block is added to the existing chain. The transaction can then be viewed and verified on the blockchain. • Here’s what makes blockchain different? There are a few important characteristics: - Decentralization: Many blockchain networks operate without relying on one central authority to control the entire system. - Transparency: On public blockchains, transactions can be viewed and independently verified. - Immutability: Once information is properly confirmed and added, changing or removing it is extremely difficult. These characteristics are part of what make blockchain interesting. Note that blockchain is not the same thing as cryptocurrency Blockchain is the underlying technology, while cryptocurrencies are digital assets that can operate on blockchain networks. For example, Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency that runs on the Bitcoin blockchain. Ethereum, on the other hand, is a blockchain network that supports ETH and allows developers to build applications using smart contracts. Blockchain technology is being used to explore new ways of handling payments, financial services, digital ownership, identity, supply chains and much more. It has opened up an entirely new way of thinking about how information and value can move across the internet. One thing to take away: You don’t have to be a trader, developer or crypto investor to understand blockchain. But if you want to understand the digital economy and the opportunities emerging from it, learning how this technology works is a good place to start.
