Reps move to prohibit landlords from demanding more than one year’s rent in Abuja
The house of representatives is considering a bill seeking to prohibit landlords, property managers and estate agents in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) from demanding more than 12 months’ rent as a condition for granting or renewing a tenancy.
The proposed legislation, sponsored by Paul Nnamchi (Enugu east/Isi-Uzo federal constituency) and Ahmed Doro (Bindawa/Mani federal constituency in Katsina), seeks to establish an authority to regulate rental payments and protect tenants from unlawful practices.
The bill also proposes measures to prevent landlords from circumventing the restriction through intermediaries, compulsory service charges, artificial tenancy renewals, separate agreements, or other arrangements designed to compel tenants to pay more than 12 months’ rent upfront.

Jide Kosoko says he’s in debt after his N300m film failed to make a profit at the cinema
Jide Kosoko says he is in debt after his film ‘Eleko: Oba Esugbayi’ failed to recoup its production cost of over N300 million at the cinemas.
In a recent interview on African A-List, the ace Nigerian actor said the money used to produce the film came from investors who expected returns on their investment.
The filmmaker disclosed that the movie did not generate enough revenue to recover its production cost, and the little earned was shared among those involved.
“My film ‘Eleko: Oba Esugbayi’ that recently came out and we took to the cinemas, cost us over N300 million. Do I have 300 million? You should know that some people gave it to me and it was not that they dashed me, they invested in it and we took the film to the cinemas,” he said.

Jean Kaseya, director-general of the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), says the female traveller diagnosed with Ebola virus in Nigeria was born in Uganda.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, Kesaya said the woman had travelled to Uganda, where she spent a few days, before her husband joined her.

‘Every Nigerian is made poor by 300%’ — Obasanjo faults naira devaluation under Tinubu
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms have contributed to the sharp devaluation of the naira and worsened poverty in Nigeria.
Speaking on Wednesday at the Financial Times Africa summit 2026 in London, United Kingdom (UK), Obasanjo said the sharp decline in the naira’s value had impoverished Nigerians and contributed to the country’s position as the world’s poverty capital.
“We do not live in isolation as a country. We interact with the rest of the world. And overnight, you devalue the currency by 300 percent. The naira went from N500 to a dollar to N1,500 to a dollar,” Obasanjo said.

OBITUARY: Reuben Fasoranti — the school teacher, Awoist who ‘worked for free as elected councillor’
Reuben Fasoranti had a childhood dream of becoming a medical doctor. But he grew up in a tiny village in Uso, Owo, under British colonial rule, where schools were neither adequately staffed nor equipped to teach science. Even switching to a better school in Ondo, a larger city, could not save his dream. Only teachers for commercial and art courses were available. With the setback, Fasoranti adjusted his interest and decided to become a teacher to fix the system.
Fasoranti went on to establish and head multiple schools that are, to this day, considered among the best in the country, producing a governor and numerous leaders.
He died on Tuesday at 100, and even leaders who never stepped into his classroom spoke about the lessons he taught them.
President Bola Tinubu said he would miss his “voice of wisdom, moral authority, and fatherly counsel”. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo said Fasoranti always offered him wise words with dignity, despite their political disagreement. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar said the late centenarian’s legacy “towers above any title or office”.

EXPLAINER: Bundibugyo #Ebola virus recorded in Nigeria differs from 2014 outbreak, has no specific vaccine
The federal government on Tuesday confirmed a positive case of Ebola disease in a female patient whose symptoms began on October 7, four days after she arrived in Nigeria.
The patient sought treatment at a private health facility in Abuja on October 11, and laboratory tests confirmed a case of imported Bundibugyo virus, a distinct Ebola disease species, for which no vaccine has been specifically licensed.
The woman has been isolated and is receiving care. Health authorities have identified 44 contacts and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the infection.
Nigeria is the fifth country to report a confirmed Bundibugyo virus case since an outbreak was declared in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in May 2026. Cases have also been reported in Uganda and Kenya.
Nigeria’s confirmation of the Bundibugyo Ebola case has drawn attention to a different member of the virus family from the one responsible for the 2014 West African epidemic, which killed more than 11,000 people.

HOW BUNDIBUGYO DIFFERS FROM THE 2014 ZAIRE EBOLAVIRUS
Ebola is not a single virus. The World Health Organisation (WHO) identifies four Ebola disease species known to cause disease outbreaks in humans: Ebola virus (Zaire), Bundibugyo virus, Taï Forest virus, and Sudan virus.
Ebola was first identified in 1976, when two separate outbreaks occurred in what are now South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). One involved Sudan virus disease in Nzara, while the other affected Yambuku in the DRC. The disease takes its name from the Ebola River near the village where the second outbreak occurred.
The 2014 to 2016 West African epidemic, which began in Guinea before spreading to neighbouring Sierra Leone and Liberia, was caused by the Ebola virus species.

'We can't go back' — Peter Mbah says restoring petrol subsidy will worsen poverty
Peter Mbah, governor of Enugu, says Nigeria cannot afford to reintroduce petrol subsidy, warning that doing so would worsen poverty and discourage investment.
Mbah spoke on Wednesday at the ‘Meet the Candidates’ town hall meeting organised by Afia TV in Enugu, where he defended President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove the subsidy.
He described calls for the reintroduction of the subsidy as a misunderstanding of the country’s economic situation, saying the government should instead focus on ensuring Nigerians benefit from the policy.
