2001: Al Gore leaves office with under $2 million to his name.
Today: an estimated $300 million+.
The business plan was simple.
STEP 1: Sell the crisis. An Inconvenient Truth (2006) puts the "climate emergency" into cinemas and classrooms, and Gore becomes a $175,000-a-speech prophet of doom.
STEP 2: Invest in the "cure". In 2004 he co-founds Generation Investment Management, a "sustainable" fund that pours money into the very green solutions he was demanding. Its partners split about $218M in profits in 2008-2011 alone. In 2007 he becomes a partner at Kleiner Perkins to bet on green tech, and the firm backs ventures like Fisker, which landed a $529M taxpayer loan.
STEP 3: Cash in. The louder the alarm, the bigger the market for his "solutions". And that's before his Apple, Google and Current TV paydays.
He told you the planet was in crisis. Then he sold you the cure.

In 2011, David Attenborough stood on the Arctic ice for the BBC's Frozen Planet and told the nation that "over the last 30 years, many teams have been seeing the condition of their local bears deteriorate." The message was clear: the ice is melting, the bears are starving, and it's your fault.
Here's what actually happened to the bears. In the late 1960s, the US Fish and Wildlife Service put the world population at about 12,000. Today even the IUCN's cautious official figure is 26,000, and the State of the Polar Bear Report puts it at just over 32,000. That's nearly triple.
The real threat to polar bears was never the weather. It was unregulated hunting. When the five Arctic nations signed the 1973 agreement to control it, the bears bounced back, a conservation success story the BBC would rather you never heard.
They scared a generation of children with a starving bear. The bears are doing just fine.
