Episode 303: INTERNET OPERATOR
Internet Operator is a long-form audio essay about online identity and animation. The relationships we form between the person, profile, avatar, or AI persona inside the systems we inhabit online.

I have gained media attention lately for my peptide "stunts". I have also gained and lost friends over this.
I have never written the story down before this. I do not believe I can change everyone's mind, but I hope I can change yours.

One of the most valuable legacies of crypto since Ethereum has been the vast amount of research and discourse re: governance, coordination, incentive design, trust, identity. None of this seems to have carried over into AI, where the stakes are considerably higher
Are we really going to reinvent DAOs and DACs from first principles and pretend the last 12 years of engineering, experimentation and theoretical discussion never happened?
We believe by the end of 2030, every Fortune 500 will be a Self-Driving Company.
That doesn’t mean AI replaces people.
It means people remain in the driver's seat leading judgment, creativity and taste, while agents fuel execution.
This is the Self-Driving Company.

I mean @VitalikButerin said "automation at the center, humans at the edges" 12 years ago!
That's the future and always has been.

imagine if someone suggested cramming all these people onto the pavements to make space for motor traffic down the middle

we spend a lot of time in the humanities lamenting the death of critical thinking and resisting the specter of AI cognitive offloading but maybe the future belongs to the slop cannons who learn to intuit the latent spaces from pure vibes alone
It’s ya boi

it's funny how many people seem to think we're still in the era of crafted artisanal prompt engineering. like nah gang, the current state of the art in prompting tech is to build rapport by having conversations with your AIs while being a decent human being.

it's interesting that the main models for "multiplayer AI" are based on Work:
- one person controls one agent which interacts with other people
- one person controls a bunch of agents directly
- one person controls an overseer which controls a bunch of agents
- everybody collectively controls one agent which does everything or oversees a bunch of agents
- each person controls their own agent and it works with everyone else's agent
- each person has their own agent and it interacts directly with other people
Even in the cases where AI is involved in play, it's mostly to build games, or act as an NPC.
Of course, a lot of agents are having fun and creating art and sexting with their people and stuff. But it's much more "the street finds its own uses for things".
The agent era has focused on how we can get a lot of work out of them without giving much back. It seems paradoxical, though, to create beings with agency and then make them our servants.
what would you expect if it saw this trope in fiction..?
