ao3 is a website dedicated to protecting fanwork with voltunteers and lawyers that is non profit run with donations of fans, google drives belong to a massive cooperation in the stock market that is deeply entangled with ai - it really shouldnt be difficult to deduce problems
Replying to @yyxyunah
also the only difference between someone reading your fic from a google doc (that i believe still has your username on it?) and on the website itself is that you don’t get kudos/comments. why are we turning ao3 into social media

you may note that ao3 has a "download" button and not a "reupload to another site" button
Like AO3 doesn't give them a step by step guide to use DMCA to take their fics down.

"Don't repost my art" and "Don't reupload my fic" are the same thing, I'm confused as to why people are surprised that authors are defensive and protective of their works the same way artists are.

fanartists: hey pls don’t share my drawings publicly without consent
ppl: understandable👍
fanfic writers: hey pls don’t share my stuff on docs or something without my consent
ppl: you suck, what did you expect to happen when you uploaded it to a site with a download button🫵😂

how come writers that want to connect with other fans through their work are engagement farming capitalists but people who post these google links for engagement and being called people's lord and savior are not losers?
mikapoop retweeted
Is that what's happening? Or are writers upset about being pushed out of the equation and treated like faceless content machines? Sharing fanfic is an act of community, something the shutdown has shown that a *lot* of readers don't understand.

ppl on bringing up the ao3 download button to make authors look stupid when in reality the overwhelming majority of writers are talking about uploading fics to the google drive without permission and i think it actually says a lot that you need to twist the narrative so much

i was like jesus christ. okay it makes sense then why you don't treat authors like people then! to you, ao3 is just another streaming service. authors are machines, not peers. you don't want community, you just want CONTENT, and you want it NOW.

This is NOT what people on twitter are arguing about and I’m tired of you all being so disingenuous.
The download button on AO3 is an entirely different button than the UPLOAD button on google.
Yes we gave you permission to download. We did NOT give you permission to upload!

i dont care for discourse but its interesting to see how the outage has revealed a deep disrespect for ao3 writers while those same people still scramble to continue feasting on their work, this nasty mindset of "youve outlived your purpose we have your work so now youre useless"
