Recommended Reading from the previous lecture. Part 2 of the lecture will be announced later.
A century after Freud, the unconscious still speaks. Where did psychoanalysis begin — and where has it arrived? In this lecture, I trace the full arc of the psychodynamic tradition: from Freud's structural model and the mechanisms of defense, through the great fractures with Adler, Jung, and Rank, to the Object Relations theorists, Kohut's Self Psychology, Bowlby's Attachment Theory, and today's evidence-based mentalization approaches. This is not a defense of Freud. It is a rigorous examination of what endures, what was revised, and what was rightly abandoned. For clinicians, trainees, and anyone who has wondered what lies beneath the surface of the mind. Presented by Dr. Mohammed Alghamdi, Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist and Psychoanalyst. (@Alghamdi97) History of Psychiatry · Lecture 4 Conducted via Zoom: 30/6/2026 7:00 PM us06web.zoom.us/j/8835757771…

This is a kind reminder of today's meeting. We will start at 7:00 p.m
Lecture 3 of the History of Psychiatry series covers the relationship between mind and brain. Psychosomatic medicine sits at the boundary of that relationship, where bodily symptoms and psychological states intersect in ways that diagnostic categories have struggled to capture consistently. Dr. Mohammed Alnuwaysir, Psychosomatic Medicine Consultant (@DrAlnuwaysir), traces how this boundary has been drawn and redrawn across the history of psychiatry and medicine. 📅 27/06/2026 📍 Zoom — link below us06web.zoom.us/j/8859340425… 🧠 Hosted by the Psychiatry and Psychology Collective (PPC)

Lecture 2 of the History of Psychiatry series covers diagnostic frameworks. Psychiatric nosology has gone through several competing systems over the past century, each built on different assumptions about what a diagnosis is supposed to capture. Dr. Mohammed Alarabi, Consultant Psychiatrist subspecialized in Schizophrenia and Psychosis Spectrum Disorders, traces the controversies behind that history and where they still surface in clinical practice today. 26/06/2026 📍 Zoom — link below us06web.zoom.us/j/8266519368… 🧠 Hosted by the Psychiatry and Psychology Collective (PPC)

Lecture 1 — Psychiatry: The Historical Arc 20 June 2025 | 7:00 PM Every era has had an answer to the same question: what causes madness, and who gets to say so. This lecture traces those answers — from the Greek physicians who first stripped mental illness of its supernatural framing, through Roman medicine, the turn of the Middle Ages, and the Islamic Golden Age hospitals that were treating psychiatric patients centuries before Europe built its first asylum. It ends in the 19th century, where reform and confinement arrived together. Presented by Dr. Malek Almatroudi | PGY3 Psychiatry Resident (@MalekMSE) 🗓 20 June | 7:00 PM Series: History of Psychiatry | PPC Lecture Series Through Zoom: us06web.zoom.us/j/8188580005… #Psychiatry #HistoryOfMedicine #MedEd #PPC

History of Psychiatry — PPC Lecture Series You cannot really understand a scientific theory without understanding its history. — Karl Popper Psychiatry is no exception. Four lectures. Four speakers. One continuous arc — from the earliest conceptions of mental illness to the diagnostic revolutions of the 20th century, the psychodynamic tradition, and the biological and integrative frameworks that define the field today. This series is built on a simple premise: knowing where psychiatry came from sharpens how you practice it. Not as a historical curiosity, but as context that makes clinical reasoning more grounded. Starting 20 June 2026. Details to follow. Stay tuned ⏳️ #Psychiatry #MentalHealth #MedEd #PPC
