Hydro fell to 561.4 GWh on 29 July, then refilled to 893.6 GWh by 30 September, +209.8 GWh y/y. That has to water the Maha crop and the grid into 2027: but was spun up in the wake of the grid failure.

Q3 2026 reversed the first half: north dried to 63.0% below its rainfall normal while hill catchments filled, reservoirs recovered from a trough of 561.4 GWh to 893.6 GWh, hydro returned to 34.5% of generation and coal fell to 22.6%.

Generation capacity does not tell the same story as actual power generation. Three days of only using renewables is an outlier considering Sri Lanka's split between non/renewables. Hydro is a balancing act between energy storage and food security.
“Renewable energy accounts for 69% of our total power generation capacity. For four consecutive days, we have not used even a single litre of diesel to generate electricity,” President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said, describing the progress made in the country’s transition to renewable energy as a major achievement.
