As the wondrous Bob Mortimer is trending, I thought I'd share this quote from his autobiography. 'I've always thought that the two most unselfish things you can do in life are to turn up on time and to be quiet around a house when someone else is sleeping.' He's not wrong ❤️

Is it a serious government that picks a fight with the National Trust over telling people the full history of their properties? Is it a serious government that picks a fight with the RNLI over the colour of skin of the people they save at sea? #GeneralElectionNow

I have come back to #COP28, because we are on the brink of climate disaster & this conference must mark a turning point. I am here to renew my urgent appeal to leaders: Recommit to the 1.5°C warming limit. End the fossil fuel age. Deliver climate justice. Make #COP28 count.

Politico: "Prime Minister, the King has been at #COP28 for two days & other world leaders are staying into the weekend. You've been here for a matter of hours & you're due to leave again imminently. You've spent more time on a private plane, than on the ground at the summit .. "

We could get angry at Suella’s latest piece of performative, pandering cruelty or… instead: let’s promote the excellent work done by @Shelter, @centrepointuk, @PassageCharity and other fine charities actually trying to help homeless people, especially now, as winter approaches.
The British people are compassionate. We will always support those who are genuinely homeless. But we cannot allow our streets to be taken over by rows of tents occupied by people, many of them from abroad, living on the streets as a lifestyle choice. 1/4

❌ Removing laws that protect fragile wild places from nutrient pollution is VERY BAD news for rivers. This is not scaremongering – the Government’s own environmental watchdog says so 🧵 (1/5)
Proposed changes to the Levelling-up and Regeneration Bill will reduce the level of environmental protection provided for in law and amount to a regression, the OEP is warning. Find out more: bit.ly/45ABnj1

I am sure some will not agree with me, I am embarrassed in how we treat people sometimes, lack of compassion, lack of common humanity, we can and must do better than this
If you come to the UK illegally: ➡️ You can’t claim asylum ➡️ You can’t benefit from our modern slavery protections ➡️ You can’t make spurious human rights claims ➡️ You can’t stay

85% of this coal is for export. The U.K. steel industry doesn’t need it and is better off importing from responsible countries. The carbon cost is huge. This mine is not compatible with U.K. climate goals. Gove knows all this. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-6…

Instead of backing 1000s of green jobs & sustainable, long-term economic revival, Govt has backed a climate-busting, backward-looking, stranded asset coal mine. The decision to greenlight this mine is a climate crime against humanity - & we must challenge it every step of the way

Let’s be very clear. Fact! There are no more cuts to funding for state schools, on top of those already inflicted, that it’s possible to make - in any shape or form - without seriously damaging our ability to deliver the breadth of care and curriculum that every child deserves!

Churches and charities are preparing to do their bit to provide these families support over the winter. But the government has chosen to focus huge resources elsewhere. In every intervention announced today, those who are facing most hardship received the least. 2/6

🧵 Around 1/2 adults receiving Universal Credit skip meals to make ends meet. An average family of four supported by Universal Credit needs £1,400 more this winter to simply stand still. Yet not one penny of the £45Bn committed in today’s mini-budget went to those families. 1/6

We should commemorate the Queen’s service and commitment to Britain internationally in a way that changes lives. Let’s create a Queen’s Development Agency charged with spending at least 0.7 % of British GDP in the most practical + flexible support for the world’s very poorest.

Well this is a lovely. Fracking to go ahead despite non-publication of safety report, despite leaked copy suggesting safety *can’t* be guaranteed, despite huge climate impacts, despite fact it won’t cut bills - oh & despite breaking election pledge, obvs theguardian.com/environment/…
