One time, I went to school for a year and a half of full-time Chinese study and came away speaking Chinese. I would say this made me learn Chinese, but since Freddie deBoer taught me that education doesn't work, I now understand that I was always going to have learned Chinese.

God’s peace is greater than the pressure. 🙏 After three scoreless innings helped send the Brewers to the World Series, Aaron Ashby told FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal: “I was just praying for a little peace in the chaos.” #AaronAshby #Brewers #MLB #NLCS #WorldSeries

The disdain for direct instruction runs so deep. A Boomer-era person close to me (a nearly fanatical supporter of child-led discovery learning) expressed concern that my seven-month old puppy might be exhausted by the puppy training class I had him in and would rebel when he got a little bit older, if I taught him too much or pushed him too hard! 🤪🤪🤪 Great review of a long overdue investigation!
The new season of @ehanford 's "Sold a Story" goes live today. The first season showed how teachers had been misled about reading instruction. Season two poses an even harder challenge. My review: thenext30years.substack.com/…

Kiké Hernández hopes the Brewers win the World Series after eliminating the Dodgers, saying they are "almost playing perfect baseball." "Their pitching was lights out. Their offense was almost suffocating ... they just didn't give us a chance." @CBSLosAngeles

So, Siegfried “Zig” Engelmann gets the notion that all children are capable of learning if they’re taught correctly. He then goes on to prove his theory with children whom others had lowered their expectations for because of the children’s background and socioeconomic status. Engelmann demonstrated that clear, consistent teaching was the key to student learning, regardless of students’ background, race, or gender. That didn’t sit well with the progressive education community. It shatters their argument that, in order to teach “disadvantaged students”, schools must first meet all of their basic physical and emotional needs. For decades, schools have lowered academic expectations and invested billions of dollars in everything from universal free breakfast and lunch to social emotional learning (SEL) to in-school laundry service. All of these programs were created to help students learn better. They didn’t. I’m not saying Direct Instruction is perfect, but I’m willing to bet that if districts like mine with almost 100,000 students and a budget of nearly $2 billion had invested in DI instead of SEL, 62% of the students wouldn’t be scoring below proficient in reading right now. Maybe season 2 of Sold A Story will convince district leaders to reconsider their priorities and how they spend their money.

How long until S2 drops? I've been told 1AM ET. From the embargoed episodes I've heard, progressive Boomers are going to be even more outraged than they were by the first season. Season 2 guts many of the most sacred beliefs of progressive education. They will fight back hard

Two episodes of season 2 of Sold a Story have been released so far. Listened to both this morning. One opponent of Direct Instruction was recorded at the time as saying the method is “totalitarian” and “awful.” This, about an instructional method that was teaching pre-schoolers algebra. In my quoted post, I was only slightly tongue in cheek, but it’s largely true: Direct Instruction is the most effective method of instruction we know of, but it makes teachers feel yucky because they have to work from scripts and tell kids what to learn instead of allowing them to discover it on their own, so is not used in schools. Generations of kids, failed by bunk instructional methods because of the ill-conceived Romantic notions of well-meaning but emotionally stunted adults. My actual worry about the show is that it will not be harsh enough. But that’s what I’m here for.
I am very excited about the upcoming season of Sold a Story, focusing on direct instruction. So, I hope it don’t harm its chances of success by spoiling the whole thing for you right now: Direct instruction is the most effective way to teach, and we’ve known it basically forever, but the entire educational system is run by immature babies who hate authority and felt it oppressive to tell kids what they should know and hold them to practicing and memorizing it. I am sorry to Emily Hanford and her colleagues if this post ruins all their hard work.

I am begging MLB not to ruin America’s pastime by selling out to soft-porn advertisers. There is something sacred about sports fandom. It builds loyalty, unites communities, and fuels the dreams of young people. I grew up in the 80's and 90's playing basketball. Who among us didn’t dream of being Michael Jordan—or, for this generation, Caitlin Clark—growing up? Now that we have families of our own, we want to pass that same love of sports on to our children. We want to cheer for our teams, celebrate our heroes, and enjoy the game together without having to shield our kids from the advertising. Please, MLB, keep America’s pastime family-friendly. Some things are worth more than advertising dollars.
Hey @MLB - wanna get more kids watching baseball? Maybe start with the commercials. Watching the playoffs tonight with my kids and here's the rundown: - Megan Fox selling ED pills in a red bodysuit - The scariest movie trailer you've ever seen - Sydney Sweeney in zero clothes promoting betting on sports Leagues can't figure out why kids don't watch. You don't need a Nickelodeon game. You're not the Savannah Bananas. Just show baseball in a way I can leave on in my house.

This is blowing up, and I didn't even mention how hard it is to take your kids to restaurants with televisions. This isn't outrage or pearl-clutching; it's simply saying, I want to enjoy the world God has given us without leading my children into debauchery.
When you watch baseball with your kids, you shouldn't have to hold the remote the whole time. But watching the postseason series has been one of the most anxious things I’ve done as a parent. The ads are R-rated on both @FOXSports and @NBCSports I’m a dad of three boys and three girls. I like the idea of having a game on together, answering their questions about a play, arguing over a call, and giving them someone to cheer for. Parents shouldn’t have to check every ad before deciding if the game can stay on. We literally mute it and close the hutch doors during commercial breaks. A kid can fall in love with baseball on an ordinary night on the couch, sitting next to someone who already loves the game. That’s something worth protecting.

cjr.org/the-interview/nicole… Important report from @dannyfunt. @Nicole_Noren: "What bothered me most was a seeming disregard for the dangers and not thinking about the ramifications of ESPN normalizing gambling for an audience that looks to ESPN as sort of their sports guide, essentially—not looking down the road at the parallels between gambling and other addictive things in our country that have been normalized, such as opioids and cigarettes, that ended up becoming major public health crises."

Shame on Adam Silver and Roger Goodell. Gambling is a cancer. One that destroys people and poisons athletics and too many athletes.
Good for her. Her family's story is so sad, and it's happening in other families all across America.
