The 477th Bombardment Group was the Army Air Forces' first Black bomber unit, training on B-25s. Their commander set up two officers' clubs at Freeman Field — carefully labeled not "white" and "colored" but "instructors" and "trainees." All the instructors were white. All the trainees were Black. Over several days in April 1945, Black officers walked into the instructors' club and asked to be served. Sixty-one were arrested. Then the commander issued a base regulation acknowledging the separate clubs and ordered every Black officer to sign it. One hundred and one refused. They were arrested for insubordination under an article of war that carried the death penalty in wartime. General George Marshall ordered them released, but letters of reprimand went into their files, and one lieutenant, Bill Terry, was convicted of "jostling" an officer, fined, and dishonorably discharged. It took until 1995 for the Air Force to clear their records and set aside Terry's conviction.
