Saapade Accident: Ogun Crime Watch Urges Police to Invite Kunle Afod over Alleged Falsehood Ogun Crime Watch has called on the Nigeria Police Force to invite Nollywood actor, Kunle Afod, for questioning over what it described as the deliberate circulation of misleading information and misrepresentation of events surrounding Friday’s road accident at Saapade on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The group said the timing of the actor’s video, in which he reportedly questioned the emergency response to the accident, raised serious concerns about his intentions and suggested an attempt to mislead the public about the intervention of the Ogun State Government’s emergency response team. In a statement signed by its President, Comrade Olumide Martin, the group disclosed that the state emergency response team arrived at the accident scene at 12:28 p.m., while Afod reportedly published his video at 12:29 p.m., barely one minute after the team’s arrival. Ogun Crime Watch said the timeline raised questions about the actor’s claims and the circumstances surrounding the production and publication of the video, particularly when emergency responders were already at the scene attending to the victims. It alleged that the video appeared calculated to create a negative impression about the government’s response, undermine public confidence in the emergency management system and advance a political narrative favourable to opposition interests. The group further alleged that the actor’s intervention bore the imprint of partisan political communication, adding that public safety and the welfare of accident victims should never be exploited for political advantage or personal gain. It therefore urged the police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the video, establish the facts and determine whether any laws were breached in the process of circulating potentially misleading information. The group emphasised that its position was not an attempt to prevent freedom of expression or legitimate criticism of government but a demand for responsibility, accuracy and accountability, especially when public statements concern emergencies involving human lives. The accident involved a Mazda bus conveying 18 passengers, which reportedly suffered a tyre burst before crashing into a concrete barrier around the Saapade axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Thirteen passengers sustained injuries and were evacuated to hospitals for medical attention. Ogun Crime Watch commiserated with the victims and their families, wishing those receiving medical attention a speedy recovery. It also urged motorists to observe speed limits, avoid dangerous driving, maintain their vehicles properly and comply with Federal Road Safety Corps regulations to reduce the incidence of preventable road accidents. The group called on public figures and social media influencers to exercise restraint and verify information before publishing reports, noting that irresponsible commentary during emergencies could create unnecessary panic, mislead the public and diminish confidence in the work of emergency responders.
Fellow Nigerians, don't be like Kunle Afod. Yesterday, along the Ibadan-Sagamu Expressway near Shapade, a serious accident involving a Mazda bus left about 13 people injured after a tyre burst. Nollywood actor Kunle Afod arrived at the scene and recorded a video in which he stated that for roughly 20 minutes there had been no ambulance or emergency services, while people lay helpless. He appealed publicly for urgent help and shared the footage on Instagram. In an emergency, the priority is simple and consistent with basic first-response guidance used worldwide: secure the scene if safe to do so, call the appropriate emergency numbers immediately, and offer practical assistance (such as directing traffic, covering victims, or helping with transport if you are able and trained) rather than setting up a camera and microphone to film. Documenting for later awareness or accountability can be useful once professional help is confirmed on the way and immediate needs are addressed. Filming first turns a crisis into content and delays accurate information from reaching responders. The claim that no help arrived for about 20 minutes does not align with the available evidence. Ogun State emergency workers and related agencies (including TRACE and FRSC) responded to the incident; reports confirm victims were evacuated to hospitals. Timestamped material shared by responders, including a phone gallery screenshot showing the scene at 12:28 PM and images of ambulance personnel attending casualties, indicates their presence before Afod’s Instagram video was uploaded. An independent check of the upload timing via InstaTimestamp further supported that an ambulance was already at the scene roughly a minute prior to the post. Other eyewitness images also showed emergency teams on site These inconsistencies matter. Stating that “nobody” and “no emergency services” had come, while responders were in fact present and working, misrepresents the timeline and the efforts of people who showed up to treat and transport the injured. Such narratives spread rapidly online, leading to broad condemnation of the agencies involved even when the underlying facts are more nuanced. Emergency workers who respond to crashes, often under difficult conditions on busy expressways, do not deserve having their documented actions diminished or erased by inaccurate statements made for public attention. In future, if you encounter an accident: call for help first, assist where you safely can, and only then consider recording if it adds clear value without interfering. Accurate information supports better responses; distorted timelines do the opposite.

Do you know what's crazy? Kunle Afod saw an accident, he parked, didn't verify anything, didn't attempt any emergency number, he recorded that video for clout and left immediately. I have this on record because he confessed it to someone. I dare him to call me a liar @kunleafod He even lied that the accident had happened and the people had been helpless for more than 20min, even as was clear with the movement in his video that it had just happened. What kind of dangerous human being is that? He made the video to project doom about Ogun State and left the gory scene without attempting to help. The despicable guy said no cars are waiting, meanwhile his own car was right there. Couldn't lead by example because he was only after the clout. For someone of his caliber, that is irresponsible and every Nigerian should condemn it. It is so unfair to the efforts of the emergency responders who were there within the acceptable response time-frame. They had to screen record their gallery to me because no one believe d when they said they saw Kunle Afod leaving. The curses those hardworking people have placed on him for ridiculing their effort and almost getting some of them suspended would take a lot to wash away. I hope he understands it before it's too late.
Replying to @kunleafod
@kunleafod I dare you to show evidence of calling the Ogun State emergency service!!! I dare you!!!! @kunleafod You saw an accident happen, you got down from your car, made a video, didn’t bother to call the emergency num, didn’t bother to help, and you zoomed off. For your info, the people at the scene didn’t call the emergency center, you didn’t call the emergency center, it’s FRSC that called after they saw the accident…

Dear kunleafod Kindly refrain from sensationalizing accident victims for public attention. The accident occurred at 12:18pm. While you were using your platform to chase clout, a Good Samaritan called the Ogun State Ambulance and Emergency Services, and the ambulance team arrived at the scene for rescue at 12:28pm. This can be verified at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu and Victory Hospital Ogere. Supporting a governorship candidate should not involve discrediting the dedicated work of civil servants who are diligently performing their duties. Please desist from this disgusting and shameful act. Adesakin Adefemi Medical Journalist, Ambulance & Emergency Beat, Lagos/Ogun State
