Brilliant
Chris Rock just nailed one of the biggest problems with wokeness.
Helping people who feel marginalized is good. He says so himself. The trouble starts when a good cause becomes an institution.
The first few witches were real. Then you open a witch office. Now there are salaries, budgets and pensions to justify, and the office needs a steady supply of witches to keep existing.
That’s the trap. Once a cause becomes a career, solving the problem means losing your job. So the problem never gets solved. It just keeps getting redefined.
A system built to find wrongdoing will keep finding it, whether it’s there or not.

If you give an ADHD employee a clear outcome, high autonomy, and a tight deadline, they will deliver an extraordinary result.
If you give an ADHD employee step-by-step micro-instructions on how to do it, demand mid-day status updates, and check in every two hours, their brain will treat the micromanagement as a wall of friction and completely freeze up.

Before AI kills us, can we at least have a few years with the sex bots who do laundry?

DHH told me on My First Million that he and Jason kept a data scientist on staff for over a decade to crunch numbers and run reports.
- "We never did what the numbers told us to do."
- "What we would do was we would do whatever the hell we wanted to do."
- "And then if the numbers supported that, we'd go, those are good numbers."
- "And if the numbers didn't support that, we'd go, yeah, I don't know. There's probably some factor you haven't calculated in."

A CEO from one of our portfolio companies shared this with their team. I’m re-sharing it with their permission, because it resonated and reflects what all founders and CEOs should be communicating.

We are living through a period of compounding change. And in moments like this, the biggest risk is no longer making the wrong decision. It is moving too slowly while the world moves around you.
There are two paths. We can play defense:
- Protect what we have
- Optimize what works
- Wait for clarity
It feels safe. It isn’t.
Or we can play offense:
- Learn faster than the environment changes
- Use new tools to solve old problems in better ways
- And create entirely new strategies and businesses
That’s where the opportunity is.
Challenge yourself to do things faster and better than you have ever attempted. Stay uncomfortable. Stay on the front foot.

I know this has already been said a million different ways, but it's increasingly clear that playing it safe with your career right now is the riskiest thing you can do.

Atlassian’s layoffs underline a wider problem: once AI is part of the explanation, every word in a restructuring memo carries more weight. The issue is no longer only headcount. It is whether leadership language sounds honest, precise, and credible. businessquarter.co.uk/how-do…
AI means people need to stop thinking so much about what their boss wants
They need to start thinking much much more about what customers want
And that will make a big difference in society: too much of it is caring about Keynesian beauty contests and other such contests that are disconnected from the direct needs of others
Less dead weight loss. More actually helping people.

The comedy vet makes his return to the desk he left in 2015 this evening, but his “both sides are equally bad” approach may not translate to 2024.

I will keep repeating: I am sad and angry and appalled. Terror is always wrong. Revenge is not a strategy. A child is a child is a child. Freedom and dignity for all. Release all the hostages. Let more aid in. Stop and think. Without a vision for a shared future, there's no end.

I'll repeat it once again for those in back: remote work doesn't imply asynchronous working practices.
You can be fully remote and expect everyone to be responsive during the same 5/6 hour window.
You have a timezone and working practice problem, not a "remote" problem.

Ukraine is not a buffer, it is a people. Zelensky is not a proxy, he is the elected president of a valiant and besieged nation that deserves every support. They are fighting for the whole free world despite being abandoned by it for so long.
