We’ve been taught to treat soil like a chemistry set.
It’s not.
Soil is a living, carbon-based system.
When we chase short-term gains, we risk long-term soil health.

Skipping soil care costs more in the long run.
Heavy N users usually use up soil N faster than it's released. Soil testing can indicate your N rate the following year.
Pairing a soil test with CetaiN can improve your soil health, leading to healthier crops the following season.

Why would an Alberta grain farmer use humics? 👇
This is the question Innovation Agronomist, Steve Cowan, has been busy answering in our latest meetings. Check out his insights!
1. Fertilizer Efficiency: Carbon in humics binds to the nutrients (especially Nitrogen & Phos), preventing the nutrient from binding to another element in the soil. Since Carbon is a molecule that plants also use, they can still take up that nutrient.
2. Bio-Stimulant: Carbon is a food source for soil biology, increasing microbial populations & activity when used. A good humic source will also provide oxygen which the soil microbes need, especially in cold soil.
3. Improve Organic Matter Cycling: Soil biology is what breaks down OM. By increasing biology population & activity, OM cycling happens more effectively. Carbon then also helps to chelate those nutrients created from the breakdown of OM to keep them plant available longer (see #1).
4. Increase Root Mass of Plants: Carbon is also an energy source for plants. Carbon will tie up elements toxic to root growth, allowing mycorrhizae and beneficial bacteria to excrete their enzymes that are needed for root development.
Reach out to your local CMN for more information on humics and how they can benefit your farm!

listen, I'm not an agronomist, but I know the tendency in poor price years is to start cutting back on the things you need to really grow a crop to save money
don't
as an old timer once told me and I've heard many times since, if it's going to be cheap, you'd better have a lot
