Kenyans have learnt to save, send and invest on their phones. They have not yet learnt to protect what they are building. That was my starting point on Wednesday as moderator of the panel at CIC Group's Intermediaries Consultative Breakfast Forum, where CIC switched on its One CIC Channels: the My CIC app, CIC Online and *304#. Insurance penetration in Kenya was 2.63 per cent last year, and that was a decade high. Three things stood out for me: 1/ One door: customers register once and see their insurance, investments and pensions across the Group in one place, which Dr Lydiah Kiburu,PhD, CLMP™ described as "a supermarket with different rooms". 2/ The agent is not dead: Fred Ruoro confirmed the same prices whether a customer comes direct or through an intermediary, with the intermediary's name on every quotation. 3/ Helen Osore had a room full of agents agreeing that "micro commissions are not micro", and then did the sums to prove it, while Humphrey Gathungu made the case for treating every client as a portfolio. The room also asked the tough questions: who gets credit when a client buys a second product directly in the app, when the iOS app goes live, and when brokers get APIs into CIC's core systems.
