Aquaculture expansion is driving demand for wild fish to feed farmed fish — putting pressure on wild fish stocks and diverting nutritious food away from people.
Growth without guardrails comes at a cost. We must protect wild fish and the communities that depend on them.

Your views are stagnant and regressive. You care only for profit and forget we need our environment to survive. Endless resource extraction looks to make only a select few wealthy while making life unlivable for the rest of us. This flower edged diatribe shows your true colors.🖕
Congratulations to Emily Lowan on her victory in Saanich North and the Islands. Running for office takes enormous grit, and whatever the political differences, nobody can deny the sheer hustle and energy her campaign brought to the doorstep. Today is her day to celebrate. Her speech last night spoke directly to issues so many British Columbians are feeling deeply: crushing rents, long waits for family doctors, and the exhaustion of working multiple jobs just to stay afloat. Those anxieties are real, and they deserve real answers.
Where her message runs off the rails, and was on the nose for many, is in the intellectual playbook she chose to summon at the podium.
Invoking the late David Graeber - the anarchist anthropologist and chief theorist behind Occupy Wall Street - Lowan quoted his line that the world is an experiment that “we make and could just as easily make differently.”
It sounds poetic in an election hall, but let’s remember what Graeber’s philosophy actually is. He wasn't arguing for better daycare funding or incremental transit tweaks. He was an uncompromising revolutionary who wrote:
“Direct action is the open defiance of an illegitimate authority... it is an insistence on acting as if one is already free, and in doing so, exposing the violence at the heart of the state.”
This isn't an abstract debate from Zuccotti Park fifteen years ago. Right here in British Columbia, we see this eco-anarchist doctrine (rejected by 90% of voters, btw) playing out in real time, where activist networks deploy blockades to obstruct First Nations who have chosen to pursue economic options, equity ownership, and major project partnerships in their own territories.
That is the most glaring flaw at the heart of the anarchist critique. While invoking Indigenous rights as an abstract slogan, this mindset routinely overrides the actual, self-determined aspirations of Indigenous communities that are choosing economic independence and shared prosperity over perpetual reliance on government transfers.
About one in ten B.C. voters backed the Greens this election. Yet I suspect very few of those well-meaning citizens have taken the time to truly examine what this strain of green thinking entails. It doesn't seek to refine our economic system. It seeks to dismantle it.
At the same time, what British Columbia does not need is an equal and opposite reaction to Graeber-think. Retreating into our own ideological bunkers and answering dogma with hardline polarization is a guaranteed path to conflict, not reconciliation.
You cannot fund community health centres, electrify transit grids, or pay nurses’ salaries with protest theory. Those services are underwritten by royalties, payroll taxes, and the tangible economic engine of B.C. - mining, forestry, energy, ports, and trade.
Tomorrow when La Rose vs HMTK opens in a Vancouver courtroom, an object lesson will be on display of what happens when Graeber-styled thinking occurs in the wild, where the goal is for the tail to wag the dog. I’ll be watching it closely.
I genuinely wish Emily the best as she steps into the Legislature. The transition from movement activist to accountable lawmaker is where ideology collides with balance sheets and physical reality. That’s a transition every British Columbian has a stake in seeing succeed.

New research finds viral heart disease is more widespread on B.C.’s open-net pen salmon farms than previously reported.
Wild salmon shouldn’t bear the risks of open-net pen farming. It’s time to get these farms out of B.C.’s waters.

For nearly a decade, The Outlaw Ocean Project has produced reporting about crimes on the watery two-thirds of the planet. The stories can leave readers feeling removed from the reporting. To avoid this, we try to connect these problems to the consumers and sellers who unwittingly benefit from them. Through supply-chain tracing, we show how the true cost of seafood is not what appears on the label.

16 days.
That’s how long a feedlot needs to meet its “containment” requirements each month. For the rest of the month, salmon are exposed to viruses, bacteria, and sea lice.
“Containment” should mean protection from these risks, every single day.

WATCH: In Question Period, @ElizabethMay demanded answers on the government’s delayed promise to shut down open-net pen salmon farms in B.C.: “Will this government commit to keep the promise and shut down these toxic fish factories by 2029?”
Here's the only update you need.. the farms are out by June 2029, prepare yourselves and stop looking for handouts. You've known this is happening for years now, no sympathy if you're not prepared. You are owed nothing.

This is one of the most powerful contributions I've seen on the issue of salmon farms. I know some of the people featured and have a great respect for all of them.

Who ever these people are.. nice work!
Imagine believing only two people are against your BS 🤭
85% + of people in BC want the farms gone. It's easy enough to see how you cook the books, so you'll go down in history as a shill for a destructive industry.
Good luck with that..
Replying to @Dallas4BC
He's the best thing ever for #aquaculture. Him and Sue both show up in some of my presentations to show how misinformed the #anti #fishfarm #believers are. Never substance to his posts just personal attacks like a play ground bully to scared to do anything. Sad really.
The biggest liar for the #salmonfarm industry just keeps burying himself deeper in their sh*t.
This idiot believes his own lies
Lance, you have no clue how much is known about how you do your work. "Lazy and rushed" is my favorite description from a former "employee". #iykyk
#sealice in the #Broughton Archipelago remain unchanged 4 years after #fishfarm removal. Red line shows 2020 results when Alex Morton claimed "no farms = no lice". Full report can be found here: mowi.com/caw/sustainability/… Stop the #20yearlie. More peer reviewed #science is coming
Funny thing about Elons Twitter.. you can't block.
You are pathetic. You gonna try to beat me with your cane? Your body is rotting away because you treat the planet like it owes you something $$$
Whoever has baited you before, good for them. You're too easy.

Genes from farmed salmon were detected in 2 out of 3 wild salmon populations along the Norwegian coast.
This is yet another example of the harmful impacts fish farms have on wild fish globally. Canada must act to ban open net pen fish farming by 2029.
Again, it's just too easy to bait this loser. Idiot thinks he's a "leader" 🤣.
Keep it up. Your rotting body is a testament to your corruption.

It takes more wild “seafood” per kg of farmed salmon to feed the bloody farmed salmon: there is no “question”.
When you see the variety of fish species available in European fish markets, the stranglehold the salmon farming industry has on UK supermarkets/consumers is obvious.
A new @SeaWestNews article discusses a campaign calling on restaurants to remove farmed salmon from their menus, while questioning what replacing it with wild seafood could mean for conservation.

Your body is failing and rotting away because you defend terrible things in the guise of protecting your people, all while you cash in. You're a disgusting POS, good luck with that. Again, its too easy to bait you, creep. #monster #loser
Its too easy to get under these idiots skin. This is someone who's making sure that wild salmon dissappear. He's a POS and a stain on this coast. #salmonfarm #cucks
