Streaming you are now officially worse than the prior technology you disrupted. A litany of apps, a tiny fraction of which work well, and endless buffering.

Don't pay attention to your competitors. Pay attention to your customers. This is a common refrain and one that is easy to agree with. But the truth is more complicated. 🧵👇

5/ Mantras like "pay attention to your customers not your competitors" are great because they are succinct and clear. But they are just that: helpful mantras to calibrate where you should focus more of your time. The truth, as always, is far more nuanced.
54
4/ Maybe what you thought was a competitor actually isn't. Maybe their product supplements yours to help you better meet the needs of your customers. Maybe they could be YOUR customer or you could be theirs because their product helps you cut costs or deploy faster.
51
3/ Every startup is a series of failures. By studying the arc of your competitors' journeys, you may be able to ascertain missteps they made along the way and avoid those missteps yourself (e.g. product launches that fizzled out, hires that didn't work, etc).
44
2/ Competitors may sell into a different mkt segment. By studying their business model, you learn what it will take to go up market. Or you may find that the market you're selling into isn't nearly as compelling as theirs and that your product could better serve that market.
40
1/ Yes, you should pay attention to your customers first and foremost. Understand their problems deeply and how your product can better serve them. But it's foolish to believe that a small sample size of customers is indicative of the larger opportunity, especially as a #startup
47
We've been hearing about an imminent #recession for over a year. Layoffs, M&A slowdown, and hiring freezes have ensued. But we haven't gotten one. This is incredibly difficult for CEOs. How long do you cut costs? When will customers buy again? Should we raise $ or sell? 🧵

7/ Startups, like any business, should make a risk-adjusted decision. If you slash runway in half to chase growth and run out of money in 12 months, can you really look back and say that was a stupid decision given the information you had at the time?
36
6/ The point isn't that you should say "fuck it" and spend like it's 2021. The point is that NO ONE knows when the next recession will come. And continuing to believe it's imminent, while ignoring data points that have been refuted, means you may be leaving upside on the table.
38
5/ Startups: remember you're playing the game of risk. Solving for 24+ months of runway because your investors say "batten down the hatches" means you trust they can predict the economy. If they could, they wouldn't be on your Board. They'd be on board a spaceship with Bezos.
31
4/ But even if you don't buy into these arguments, what needs to happen to feel confident a recession is on our doorstep? We can't keep finding new leading indicators, and ignoring the old, expecting something to come that just doesn't.
34
2/ If you believe this article, now may be the best time to swim against the tide and take a risk. businessinsider.com/wall-str… Maybe pull the trigger on that expensive hire you've been mulling. Or launch that crazy marketing idea you just didn't have the balls to spend $$ on.
30
1/ You could argue that the only thing worse than a recession for business owners is a "pending recession". Everyone sits on their hands in fear of what is coming only to play the "hurry up and wait game". It isn't sustainable. Something has got to give.
