This is why the UKCCC has been developed, a reaction to what we percieved as weaknesses in the marketplace. Transparency is key as is projects that issue credits being net zero before selling, monitored by a physical annual visit and creating accurate project boundaries.

As well as ensuring the project host is at net zero before selling carbon credits, UKCCC approval ensures that biodiversity enhancement and connectivity has been built into the project.

The UKCCC calculates all emissions and all sequestration from all natural capital assests, certifies the net zero position, charts the journey and only allows the sale of carbon credits once the landholding has reached net zero.
Negative outcomes are avoided by well designed projects at the outset accompanied by annual monitoring
Leakage can only be avoided by having oversite of an entire landholding business, calculating all emissions and all sequestration to ensure no increase in emissions as a result of the project.
You can only ensure additonality with a change in management that has led to reduced emissions and increased sequestration of atmospheric carbon.
Permanance is only assured through long term projects, where the land manager remains engaged in the process for years
Here we have the ICVCM core carbon principles. The UKCCC designed these into its standards as its inception to ensure that it only issued the most robust credits and to ensure additionality, permanence, avoided leakage & avoided negative outcomes 🧵

Yes, you will see it was formed as a Community Interest Company less than a week ago. Further directors and members added soon. It has been formed by a diverse group of stakeholders from farmers, land managers, tech, finance and insurance interests.
The UKCCC project process identifies and helps to place potential BNG credits on a national register so that developers can do just that, pick the ones they want off the shelf....

The UKCCC doesn't want to buy them, it simply issues and places the on the register upon approval, its up to you when you sell and to whom.
Point taken but the drive to net zero is very often, good business. The farms we work with who manage to issue the most offsets are often the most profitable.
Replying to @RWilliamson01 @TWBFarms
absolutely and reducing emissions more often than not goes hand in hand with increased profit from food production, the ability to sell offsets becomes an additional outcome..
Replying to @TWBFarms
Yes I did say that. it is not a legal obligation to become net zero before selling offsets. It is however a moral one and I sense we will not agree on this point.
Replying to @TWBFarms
that's not what we are suggesting, maybe i communicated it poorly. Farmers can potentially do well and the UKCCC intends to make sure they do!
Replying to @TWBFarms
nobody is giving farmers money away, its about taking the initiative and taking control. for once farmers have amazing control at their fingertips as they are uniquely placed to help reverse climate change and biodiversity collapse and get paid for doing so.
Replying to @TWBFarms
You are correct there is no legal obligation for you to be Net Zero. We feel that farmers should be at net zero before selling offsets. Selling offsets before being net zero is greenwash & offsets sold without that assurance will become devalued. The UKCCC exists to prevent that.
Replying to @FlatToTheMatt
Completely agree. The UKCCC helps unlock the opportunity in all of a farms natural capital assets, not just soil... What we do know is that adopting the practices that sequester the most C also improve food production returns as well.

I believe you have fundamentally misunderstood the aims of the UKCCC and that of the burgeoning carbon market. Happy to meet and discuss as its important that we get this right for farmers and that everyone understands the market as it is developing.

Project approval fees..
We probably wont agree on your first point, happy to discuss offline if you would like Clive?
In our opinion farmers do need to be at net zero before selling offsets. One needs to remember that not many (if any) other industries can sequester CO2..
Replying to @ChrisTurves @TWBFarms
There is no premium now. The opportunity is to get to net zero and sell excess offsets..
