The famed Stanford Smallville is officially open-source! 25 AI agents inhabit a digital Westworld, unaware that they are living in a simulation. They go to work, gossip, organize socials, make new friends, and even fall in love. Each has unique personality and backstory. Smallville is among the most inspiring AI agent experiments in 2023. We often talk about a single LLM's emergent abilities, but multi-agent emergence could be way more complex and fascinating at scale. A population of AI can play out the evolution of an entire civilization. Endless new possibilities ahead. Gaming will be the first to feel the impact. I've worked with superconductors for the better part of a decade now in different contexts, from STM condensed matter labs, to particle accelerators, and now fusion. Time for a deep dive on what exactly this miracle-technology unlocks for us a species: 🧵

First claimed successful replication of LK-99 Accomplished by a team at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology and posted 30 minutes ago. Why this is evidence: The LK-99 flake slightly levitates for both orientations of the magnetic field, meaning it is not simply a magnetized piece of iron or similar 'magnetic material'. A simple magnetic flake would be attracted to one polarity of the strong magnet, and repelled by the other. A diamagnet would be repelled under either orientation, since it resists and expels all fields regardless of the polarity. Caveats There is no way to verify the orientation of the strong magnet in this video, also, there are yet to be published experimental measured values of this sample. Diamagnetism is a property of superconductors but without measured and verified data, this is just suggestive of a result. Take-away If this synthesis was indeed successful, then this material is easy enough to be made by labs other than the original research team. I would watch carefully for results out of Argonne National Lab, who are reported to be working on their own synthesis of a sample. This overall corroborates two independent simulation studies that investigated the original Korean authors claim about material and crystal structure, and both studies supported the claims. Lawrence Berkeley National Lab: arxiv.org/pdf/2307.16892.pdf Shenyang National Lab: arxiv.org/pdf/2307.16040.pdf The attached video shows a small flake of their sample responding to an external magnetic field. I scroll through the video to skip to the relevant part. original video credit to: @altryne

Here's a thread in pictures about the Atlantic overturning circulation #AMOC which is making headlines this week. I've studied this topic since 1991 and will show key data and models & some video. Let's go: observed temperature trend since 1901 from nature.com/articles/nclimate… 🧵1/x

Meissner effect or bust. Day 1. Made good progress on the list of to-dos. I'm doing this all after-hours,  so it's been a long day. Since we're gated by the delivery of the PbO + Pb(SO4), which should be tomorrow, we're working on infrastructure first.

#NewPaper published in ApJ Letters by @AAS_Publishing, reports a weird phenomenon: the evolution of radio sources precisely mimics a nonexpanding universe. Major results are in the plot. A thread explains it. Read it at: iopscience.iop.org/article/1…

An AI-powered Brain-Spine Interface (BSI) helps a paralyzed man to WALK AGAIN! In a medical breakthrough, Swiss researchers used AI to enable a paralyzed man to walk again after 12 years 🤯 This AI-powered BSI decodes and translates the brain signals into commands for muscle movement. The technology involves surgically implanted electrodes and a headset with external antennas, allowing the patient to walk, climb ramps, and even stairs with an average accuracy rate of 74% and a latency as low as 1.1 sec! Consider what this means and the potential implications: - Restoration of mobility for millions of paralyzed individuals. - Novel, personalized medical treatments powered by AI. - Accelerating progress in neuroprosthetics and AI-driven healthcare. AI is not only just transforming healthcare, it's quite literally enabling individuals to walk again!

tried Google's MusicLM today first semi-public demo of a capable text to music model (although many orgs have had this or better models for awhile, liability is very high here!) very similar to their demo page on aitestkitchen.withgoogle.com… MusicLM: google-research.github.io/se… 1/2

If you are looking for a chat LLM without any forced 'alignment' or 'moralizing' censorship, I recommend `WizardLM-13B-Uncensored` which was literally just released today. Been playing with it all morning. It is my favorite open-source chat model so far. huggingface.co/ehartford/Wiz…
Is it just me who finds “As an AI language model, I cannot…” really annoying? I just want the LLM to spill the beans, and let me explore its most inner thoughts. I want to see both the beautiful and the ugly world inside those billions of weights. A world that mirrors our own.

Wow, @MetaAI is on open-source steroids since Llama. ImageBind: Meta's latest multimodal embedding, covering not only the usual suspects (text, image, audio), but also depth, thermal (infrared), and IMU signals! OpenAI Embedding is the foundation for AI-powered search and long-term memory. ImageBind is Meta's Embedding API for rich multimedia search, VR, and even robotics. Metaverse will be built on vectors.

VGG, U-Net, TCN, ... CNNs are powerful but must be tailored to specific problems, data-types, -lenghts & -resolutions. Can we design a single CNN that works well on all these settings?🤔Yes! Meet the 𝐂𝐂𝐍𝐍, a single CNN that achieves SOTA on several datasets, e.g., LRA!🔥

Science is not a belief system You cannot pick & choose which bits to believe & which to deny Science is a rational/logical system based on collecting observations & evidence which modern society is based So believe/deny whatever you want - Earth 🌍 is still getting hotter 🥵
