Everyone remember Brian - who felt he was aggrieved because people on his flight to Florida were in wheelchairs yet able to board plane without assistance? Brian felt it appropriate to photograph them & complain to the airline. What’s worse, the airline pandered to him. /1 🧵

“I’m not testing for Covid. If I’m sick I’m sick. What difference does it make?” It makes a big difference. You SHOULD be testing. There’s things you should do differently if it’s Covid. Governments & public health aren’t informing you - but that doesn’t change reality 🧵/1

Today, the Taliban passed a law that bans women from showing their faces and having their voices heard in public. Their burqas must now entirely cover their faces and they are not permitted to speak in public or to look at any males that are not relatives. Perhaps it’s been an emotional year, or maybe it’s because I’m triggered, but I once again cried when I heard the news. I’m still trying to piece myself together. Not even animals are treated with such cruelty, such dehumanization, such indignity, and such little value for human life. This is the entire erasure of the existence of women, and it cuts me to the core to know what Afghanistan and Iran were before this cancerous plague was brought to us. Where are the protests? Where is the outrage? Where is the ICJ? The ICC? Amnesty? Why doesn’t anybody care about the effective enslavement of millions of women under the jihadist system of gender apartheid?

I love this! Great idea!
The 7-yr old & I have started a book club. We sit side by side & read books, talk about books, sometimes we have snacks, sometimes we lie in bed or curl up together. I hear little awws and giggles from her at times & it makes me happy because I am inevitably reading some sad heavy book

Too many mandates. Too many things added on. To the point where educators have no room left to be creative, innovate, and simply enjoy the people in their spaces. We need to simplify things, remove the minutiae and trust our professionals. Educators can be amazing if we let them.

👥 Students who have #IEPs are not "special education students." They are simply students. They belong to every educator they have. Receiving a service shouldn't impose an identity. #LeadInclusion #EdLeaders #Teachers #UDL

Did you know that Hawaiians came to Canada as workers, with many being employed by the Hudson's Bay Company in British Columbia? In fact, the word Canuck, may have actually come from the term for these workers, Kanaka. Their story is often overlooked, but they were an important part of B.C.'s history. This is their story. Kanaka was a word used to describe the Hawaiian worker, which comes from the Hawaiian name for themselves of kānaka ʻōiwi. The name means "human being" The use of Kanaka to describe people who worked in British Columbia, as well as other places like Australia, is considered offensive today. Hawaiian workers were aboard the first exploration and trading ships to reach British Columbia. Many jumped ship and lived among the Indigenous Peoples of British Columbia. When Fort Vancouver was established, many chose to live in the area. They also helped to build Fort Langley. Eventually, they were the largest ethnic group in the fort for at time. On the Gulf Islands, so many Hawaiians moved there that it became known as Little Hawaii. They began to work in fur brigades and many were contracted by the Hudson's Bay Company. Typically, they were given a contract of two to three years and were prized as workers. By 1845, 200 Hawaiians were working for the Hudson's Bay Company. Many Hawaiian men married Indigenous women, and their descendants are still found in British Columbia. Kanaka Creek was a settlement of Hawaiian-Indigenous families, which is now part of Maple Ridge. When the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush happened, the Hawaiians were involved in staking claims. Kanaka Bar, British Columbia gets its names because of the number of Hawaiians who worked there. The descendants of the Hawaiians who came to British Columbia over 150 years ago still live in the province, and throughout the rest of the country. Many places are named for them including the Kanaka First Nation near Lytton, Kanaka Ranch, Kanaka Row in Victoria, Kanaka Creek and Kanaka Road on Salt Spring Island. Young children are like scientists - constantly testing their theories about the world. Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget is revered in education circles as the father of “constructivism” - which is a theory that young children create knowledge by connecting new experiences with past learning, through a process not unlike the scientific method. And here’s an amazing example. Faced with something unfamiliar (an anti-theft security tag affixed to a shoe), this little guy draws upon his existing knowledge (or “schema” in Piagetian terms) to make sense of what he’s seeing. In a sign of the times that would have fascinated Piaget (who died in 1980), our hero assumes that the shoe comes with its own charger, which - according to its label (a size 10 sticker) will permit the owner to walk for 10 minutes after charging. (Or perhaps this is the time required to achieve a full charge?) It’s really a pretty amazing hypothesis that draws on multiple different data points. Not shown in the video is what happens next. Had his theory been affirmed as correct (which in this case it isn’t), the example of a battery powered shoe with a USB port would have been “assimilated,” strengthening his existing knowledge of electronic devices. Presuming mom provides some explanation about store security tags, however, our little scientist will be disproven - forcing him to “accommodate” within his existing schema to take the existence of a new object into account. Either way, knowledge is being constructed. What an impressive little guy! 🧠 Have you noticed your children test their theories about the world? If so how? 🎥 hannahs_journeys IG

Understanding this seems to be a global problem (I’m in NZ) these days is comforting, yet sad, scary for future, frustrating … whole thread is an important read to share.
Attendance and picking children up for school - a thread 🧵 Whilst I totally buy into the mindset of getting children to school at almost any cost, there is a stark reality to this that the people suggesting extreme measures (head teachers collecting) simply do not understand.

What attendance really needs is a joined up approach across a range of partners including health, social care, schools etc.

We also need, desperately, for media and government to support increasing respect levels for schools and teachers. The long term undermining of teachers’ positions in society through the pandemic and beyond has hugely damaged the views people have of the value placed on education
