Venezuelan Barrels
In another sign of the unusual lengths some refiners are going to to obtain crude, Petroperu has bought Venezuelan oil for the first time since 2009.
The company purchased two cargoes of a blend of Venezuelan Merey 16 and West Texas Intermediate pumped from the US Permian Basin from Trafigura, according to Petroperu. The cargoes, a combined million barrels, are set to be delivered in April and May.
Peru’s moves come as it diversifies its crude diet. The country typically buys heavy Ecuadorian oil for its three refineries but now includes Venezuelan barrels after the ouster of strongman Nicolas Maduro and the easing of US sanctions.
Trafigura may tap its stash of Venezuelan crude currently stored in the Caribbean to supply the Andean nation. According to Kpler data, the ship Torm Belis delivered 128,000 barrels of WTI to Curacao in late March, suggesting that Trafigura may use the island as a platform to blend oil and supply Peru.
