She says it quietly, like she has said it to herself a thousand times. Then she tries to tell the rest, and keeps stopping to say sorry. The hardest part is one day with her father. He locked her older sister in a closet and turned on Ziggy. Ziggy screamed as loud as she could. Her sister pounded on the door from the inside. When it stopped, her sister crawled across the floor to her, and Ziggy says that moment tied them together and broke them both forever. Child services saw it. They took the kids out, and then gave them right back to the mother. One room. One bare mattress for everyone. At school Ziggy told the other kids she just hated showering, because the truth was nobody had ever taught her how. When her grandmother finally took her in, she kept her in lockdown rehab, and Ziggy says it was only so the social security checks kept coming. Today her sister can’t stay in a relationship. One brother is showing signs of schizophrenia. The youngest barely speaks. Her parents are still married. And every few months her mom calls to apologize, then calls again later with no idea who she is talking to. Ziggy is 25. She says she is finally happy, and that she is learning none of it was her fault. So how does a kid survive all of that and still come out saying she’s happy, and how many adults had to look away for it to happen?
