people are comparing it to downloading and reposting someone's artwork but those two things aren't equal because ao3 is an archive, NOT a social media platform, and people saving fics in the case of the site going down is another archival method...

I find it quite ironic how many AO3 authors I'm seeing who are mad about people downloading their work without their permission (from a site that explicitly allows it) while the entire point of said work is using someone else's characters, ideas, and IP without permission.

my thoughts on this whole downloading fics things is a) ao3 has always had the notificable option to download fics, b) people who have survived or know about fic purges and mass deletions are going to want to save any fic they like, c) the fact that it took the longest shutdown

I dont understand why people keep talking about gdrive as if it's some social media platform. Your drive is personal storage. The contents of a drive are not searchable on the internet, you can only access it if someone gives you the link and that access can be revoked anytime
