My wife has taught high school in Tokyo for twenty years.
Every year, a few of her students spend a year living with a family in America. When they come home, she asks each of them one question.
"What do you miss?"
She expects hamburgers.
She almost never gets hamburgers.
And these aren't old stories. Most of these kids came home in the last two years.
"Every time I left the house, my host mom said, 'Text me when you get there.' In Japan, nobody needs to know where I am. In Ohio, somebody always did." (Mina, 17, Ohio)
"If you walk toward a door, an American will hold it open. Even if you are very far away. So you have to run. I ran to so many doors." (Itsuki, 16, Georgia)
"My host brother screamed on the floor of a grocery store. A stranger walked by and said to my host mom, 'You're doing great, Mama.' She almost cried. I didn't know strangers were allowed to say that." (Aoi, 17, Texas)
"We went away for the weekend and left our trash can at the curb. When we got back, it was by the garage. Nobody said who. My host dad said if it had been there one more day, the neighbor would have knocked." (Haruto, 16, Minnesota)
"A car got stuck in the snow in front of our house. Four men came out of four houses. Nobody called them. They pushed, the car drove away, and they went back inside without saying their names." (Ren, 17, Michigan)
"Every American has jumper cables. Maybe half of them know which clip goes where. The other half help anyway." (Shin, 16, Montana)
"In July, my host family put a cooler on the porch. Cold water, snacks, and a sign: 'For our delivery drivers. Thank you!' I asked if they knew the drivers. They said no." (Nanami, 16, Arizona)
"Downtown, there are banners on the lampposts. Photos of soldiers from the town. Some old, some very young. My host grandpa walked me down the street and told me every name." (Yuna, 16, Iowa)
"I got a C-plus on my first test. My host dad said, 'I'm proud of you,' and put it on the fridge. In Japan, nobody is proud of a C-plus." (Takeru, 17, Pennsylvania)
Then the quietest girl in the class raised her hand.
Sora. Seventeen. Missouri.
"Nobody asks me 'home safe?' anymore," she said.
She was wrong.
In September, there was a typhoon warning for Tokyo. At 2 a.m., Sora's phone lit up.
It was her host mom. In Missouri. Watching the weather in a country she had never been to.
"Saw the storm. You home safe?"
Sora told my wife she cried for a long time. Then she typed the answer she had typed a hundred times, from football games and friends' driveways.
"Home safe."
Her host mom wrote back one line.
"Good. That's all I needed."
My wife has asked that question for twenty years. Not one kid has ever said they missed how big America is.
They miss how America says goodbye. And how it checks that you got home.
So, America. You think you've lost something.
You haven't. It's on a porch in Arizona. It's pushing a car in Michigan. It's awake at 2 a.m. in Missouri, watching our weather.
You don't remember doing any of it.
A kid in Tokyo will never forget.

This day I always dread because itβs a very emotional day for me. If you know me well, you know that I donβt typically get teary about many things. But I wanted to take a moment and write a longer post here about 9/11.
If you are old enough to remember this wretched day 25yr ago, it is truly a curse to have witnessed such an act of evil; to have those images of death and destruction seared into your memory. I will never forget watching the second plane hit, live on television as my freshman study hall class gathered around a small tv. Or seeing people jumping to their death as the buildings burned. The mangled wreckage in the fields of PA after passengers and crew fought back. The Pentagon with a hole blown in it. People walking the streets of NYC coated in dust. First responders and rescue dogs searching for survivors under piles of debris for days straight. The phone calls of people trapped in the WTC or stuck on hijacked planes sending their final messages to loved ones or to operators.
Yet, what a blessing to witness and be part of the one of the most unifying moments in our young countryβs history. Through shared grief, loss, pain, confusion, and anger we came together. United as one. That feeling of unity was like medicine. It helped with the pain and eased suffering. It even lifted some spirits. It was the first step in a long and seemingly endless road to recovery.
When things get difficult or the future seems grim, I always think of the feeling I had seeing our country proud to be Americans. Arguments we had with one another were abandoned. Lines that divided us were erased. We instead clung to each other and sought refuge and comfort with our neighbors. We shared a bond with people thousands of miles away that weβve never met or seen before. The differences we had, the city and state we lived in, the way we lookedβnone of this mattered anymore. We all became proud to wave the flag. We all became proud to call our fellow citizens sister and brother. Like a spring that bubbles up from ground and swellsβthe sense of camaraderie and love of country washed over many. It was faith. It was hope. It was love. Itβs important to remember the bad parts of this day, but please, please always remember the good that we saw. Remember that feeling and try to live it each day. Remember those we lost.
WE WILL NEVER FORGET.

The right wing invented the idea that women, en masse, were supporting Lindsay Clancy killing her kids through a handful of weird TikToks, some made long before the case, and intentionally misunderstanding ANY discussions around the case or around postpartum as well as purposefully misrepresenting or remaining intentionally ignorant of what the case was actually about which anyone who actually watched the trial knows it was not arguing that "HoRmoNeS" made her kill her kids.
From interviews done, not even the dumb women in front of the courthouse said they supported her killing her kids. They think she actually did lose her mind due to the drugs she was prescribed and its a tragedy that could have been prevented with better mental Healthcare. One woman said she was there because she lost her son to suicide and blamed the poor treatment she felt he got for him taking his life. Just saying. Those are thier words. Intent is important even if tying a cause to this case was unwise at best.
They then decided to tie thier invented concept of masses of women supporting Clancy murdering her kids to abortion. And now, we have these same male influences or commentators presenting as fact and writing about a social event they completely manufactured from the beginnig. That is mass hysteria. Or intentional deception. And women all over the place are being attacked over invented nonsense, including pro-life, conservative, SAHMs. That's literally a witch hunt.
Not only does this make me think of the hysteria behind the witch trials, but it also reminds me of one time, in high school, when a group of mean girls started a rumor I was dating some guy in our school. I told them, in class, that I was not and they genuinely got sad about it. I asked them how they can be sad about something they made up themselves. Well, we now have all these people deeply angry over something they made up themselves.
This is sheer lunacy. Turning men against women by lying about this trial and women in general is evil and the right-wing needs to start reigning this in immediately.

Lindsay Clancy supporters need to be careful what they wish for.
They think they're raising awareness for women's mental health and PPD - but they're actually sending the message that women aren't safe.
These videos are going to be online forever - and they may change conversations about women's mental health. But it won't be for the better.

This is 2026. People cosplaying as things they donβt have the authority, the talent, or the track record to actually be. Just for content.
A mayor playing president. A founder playing operator. A content creator playing one-on-one thinking heβs a pro. A 25yr old with a ring light playing economist. Everyone auditioning. Nobody building.
Were raising a generation that learning the reward isnβt in doing the thing itβs in looking like you did the thing. The clip is the career. The pose is the product. The soundbite is the substitute for a lifeβs work.
Don't fall for distractions

What a day- At the Toy Story 5 premiere my son-in-law, Divighn (who sang on The Voice) said to me βIβm going to send you an early birthday presentβ. He knew I was fascinated by the dude Roy Orbison. He just sent me his studio cover version of βYou Got Itβ by Roy Orbison. He was singing it, thinking about my daughter. What a talent he is. Turn up the volume and enjoy. #Divighn

Tolerance is not a Christian virtue. We see this echoed often, but what are the implications for a Christian in practice? The Bible calls us to rebuke evil which means confronting wickedness, false teachings, or demonic influences. I will do this for you now. 1/9
