Marienburg Castle (Schloss Marienburg), a 19th-century Gothic Revival castle located near Hanover in Lower Saxony - Germany. Marienburg Castle was built between 1858 and 1867 by King George V of Hanover as a romantic 39th birthday gift for his wife, Queen Marie. Intended as a summer residence, the fairytale structure was never fully completed because Prussia annexed the Kingdom of Hanover following the Austro-Prussian War in 1866. The royal family was forced into exile, leaving the castle completely uninhabited for nearly 80 years. This prolonged vacancy accidentally preserved its original mid-19th-century design, allowing it to survive both World Wars undamaged.
