As I tell my students (the good Mr. Gold included!) - most leaders were at least a bit Italian fascism curious during the Interwar. From artistic and movement aesthetics to economic and political corporatism and beyond. Note this does not apply for the regime north of the Alps.
The New Deal wasn’t fascist but it objectively wasn’t antifascist. The man who ran the first New Deal (Hugh Johnson) was a Mussolini stan. Socialists at the time called FDR a fascist due to the corporatism of stuff like the NRA

Women being more censorious than men is a remarkably stable finding. US general social survey data from the 1970s to 2014 shows that men were around 8 percentage points more likely than women support letting a communist speak publicly, and almost 10 points more likely for a racist.

Culture persistence with migration: About 20,000 Confederate Americans migrated to Sao Paulo state, Brazil, after the Civil War. 150 years on, their areas of settlement are more developed, Protestant, and English-speaking, but not more right-wing. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Similarly, Brazil deliberately sought high quality migrants, mostly Italian and German, in Europe in 1870s-1920s as part of a "whitening" policy. A century later, their settlement areas in Sao Paulo State have higher schooling levels and higher incomes than comparable areas.

Why Brazil is Brazil: during the huge population boom of the second half of the 20th century, the lowest class decile had more than twice as many kids as the highest (7 vs 3 in the 1914 birth cohort, 5 vs 1.9 in the 1964 birth cohort).

This meme is incredibly dumb, yet it gets posted all the time, presumably by people who’ve never bothered to read “On Miracles” directly and are getting it second-hand from bad apologists. It has nothing whatsoever to do with Hume’s argument. A short thread. 1/🧵

Lula's Third Worldism: Defend Maduro and Cuba, inveigh against Israel as a genocide state, blame Ukraine as much as Russia for the war.
Imagine thinking that Lula isn't an extremist. He has: (1) Whitewashed Maduro’s repression in Venezuela, and in June 2023, when questioned about support for Maduro, Lula said the concept of democracy was “relative” and emphasized that Venezuela had held more elections than Brazil. (2) Defended Cuba’s treatment of dissidents. In March 2010, amid hunger strikes by Cuban political prisoners, Lula compared their situation to that of ordinary Brazilian prisoners and argued that Cuba’s judicial decisions should be respected. (3) Comparing Israel’s Gaza campaign to Hitler’s extermination of the Jews. (4) Assigning Zelensky equal responsibility for Russia’s invasion. In his May 2022 Time interview, Lula said Zelensky was “as responsible as Putin for the war.”

If banning the SAT got your attention, the government says "Hold my beer: we did it for 44 years" :-[ 1980, Carter killed PACE - the national, score-ordered merit exam for federal jobs. It had a hard pass-bar of 70. They said it was a 5-year fix, with a new test coming. But they built-in a hand grenade: any new test needed plaintiffs' lawyers' approval. For 44 years (!!!) no new test, and no challenge. Hiring flipped from objective merit to internal promotion, vague notions such as "Outstanding Scholar", being in top 10% of *your* classroom, or self assessment. youtube.com/watch?v=PihxtxJF…

Kevin Massacre is his alias. He chose the most badass name he could think of.
Colombian National Police Arrest Alleged ACSN Leader ‘Kevin Massacre,’ Successor to ‘Bendito Menor’ Colombian National Police have arrested a man known by the alias ‘Kevin Massacre,’ identified as the alleged leader of the Autodefensas Conquistadoras de la Sierra Nevada (ACSN). Authorities say he is the presumed successor to ‘Bendito Menor,’ who was killed during a recent police operation in Riohacha, La Guajira. According to official reports, the suspect is linked to the control of drug trafficking routes in the Colombian Caribbean, the acquisition of weapons and ammunition, and ongoing conflicts between criminal groups in the region. During the operation, police seized a fragmentation grenade, 120 rounds of .38-caliber ammunition, a pickup truck, and three cell phones, which were turned over to the authorities.

Employee theft in Africa. On social media, many small businesses share stories of employee theft. Labor exploiting capital. A lack of trustworthy people makes it hard to scale-up businesses and have a functioning labor market.

"The perfect embodiment of this rapprochement is the concept of “Islamophobia”, which left-wing academics, journalists and intellectuals have brandished for decades to shield Islam from legitimate criticism, much to the delight of Islamists."
Islamo-Leftism Is Not a Conspiracy Theory It’s an unrequited love affair “The Red-Green alliance does not rest on covert coordination behind the scenes, but on ideological kinship, a shared enemy (Western civilization, modernity and capitalism) and a hefty dose of naivety on one side.” “The bargain is straightforward: leftists coddle Muslims and give them preferential treatment, while Muslims respond by voting for left-wing parties.” “What makes this love affair tragic is that it is mostly unrequited.” “There may be ‘Queers for Palestine’, but there are no ‘Queers in Palestine’.”

This is actually a good framework for explaining people's attitudes toward AI, with broad explanatory power.
Using AI is not permitted for precisely those things I’m skilled at and get social status from, fine otherwise.

Neglected topics in academia, according to a survey. 1. Race/group differences 2. Sex/gender differences and biology 3. Religion/tradition/meaning 4. Markets/political economy/the political right
❌When open inquiry shrinks, so does the scope of what scholars study. In collaboration with @epkaufm and @Hartz_PhD, this new survey of HxA members shows exactly which topics some scholars feel are off limits:

I don't have a strong view on whether Holmes should be in prison or not. But I think its fascinating how our culture(s) oscillate between the social norms of gender equality & the social norms of chivalry. This argument is an example of the latter xitter.cf/TheFP/status/211261250…
