Breslin said the best stories in a newspaper are in the loser's locker room.
Replying to @JakeSherman
Plus, most kids learn to read newspapers by read the sports section and stats. Take sports away and the only people reading newspapers in the future will be the people who ran student govt when they were kids.

Kostya Khudov, the Ukrainian next to me in this photo, could’ve fled Kyiv. Instead, he drove against traffic on Feb 24, 2022 to find me in the city. He stayed with our team every day since — coming under artillery, ballistic missiles, drones for us. @JeffBezos #SaveThePost

I’ve driven into hurricanes, trekked through jungles and camped on an ice sheet in sub-zero temperatures to bring you news about climate change. If you value this work, and everything else you read in @washingtonpost, help us send a message to @JeffBezos: #SavethePost

Hi @JeffBezos. I'm proud to work with colleagues @FrancescaEbel @maryilyushina @RobynDixon__ who have fearlessly exposed Russia's brutal decimation of its own troops & economy in its pursuit of aggressive imperial expansion. Their work has never mattered more. #SaveThePost

The Baltimore Sun dissolved its features department Monday, reassigning its staff to news departments – the first time since at least 1888 the newspaper won’t have even one reporter dedicated to covering the city’s cultural life.

I realize “fight” must poll well because all the politicians say it all the time, but it makes me cringe. I find it unhelpful and divisive because it contributes to the us-vs-them narrative. How about “work,” “serve,” “organize,” “unite,” “vote,” “win”?!!!

For us nostalgics, could we have one refrain tonight at the Dem convention of FDR's 1932 campaign song, Happy Days Are Here Again? "Happy days are here again The skies above are clear again So let’s sing a song of cheer again Happy days are here again." youtube.com/watch?v=SMN55RKF…

The @baltsunguild had a lunchtime rally today, drawing attention to concerns they have with their new(ish) owners, David Smith and Armstrong Williams. A short thread:

"When the Key Bridge opened in 1977, mastodons of the seas such as the Dali didn’t exist," @willenglund writes. "Now they do, and now it appears that six road workers who were on the bridge have lost their lives." wapo.st/3xmIrmY

E.B. White wrote in The New Yorker in 1943, in the middle of World War II:  "We received a letter from the Writers' War Board the other day asking for a statement on 'The Meaning of Democracy.' It presumably is our duty to comply with such a request, and it is surely our pleasure .... Surely the Board knows what democracy is. It is the line that forms on the right. It is the don't in don't shove. It is the hole in the stuffed shirt through which the sawdust slowly trickles; it is the dent in the high hat. Democracy is the recurrent suspicion that more than half of the people are right more than half of the time. It is the feeling of privacy in the voting booths, the feeling of communion in the libraries, the feeling of vitality everywhere. Democracy is a letter to the editor. Democracy is the score at the beginning of the ninth. It is an idea which has not been disproved yet, a song the words of which have not gone bad. It's the mustard on the hot dog and the cream in the rationed coffee. Democracy is a request from a War Board, in the middle of a morning in the middle of a war, wanting to know what democracy is."

One of Joe Biden’s most significant foreign-policy achievements to date remains curiously overlooked. Mounting evidence suggests the US government was crucial to keep pro-Bolsonaro generals at bay in 2022 when Brazil's democracy was on the brink 🧵👇

Alexei Navalny’s death is just one more reason why Ukrainians will continue to fight to oust Russia from their territory, not because they necessarily liked Putin’s critic. But because they know that anything that lives under Kremlin rule dies, literally and figuratively.
