I wrote about autistic people on screen melting people’s hearts. And how it’s all a bit nuts. ‘Telly is weird. As an autistic person, I’ve never felt wholesome’ medium.com/@elsalwilliams/te…

Last year I told a friend I was spending Christmas Day alone. Her response: ‘Oh yeah. Been there’. I was relieved, like, oh really? ‘Yeah, we did that last year’ I stopped for a second. ‘We??’ And she goes, ‘Me and my husband, with the dog’

In another universe, Russell Tovey occasionally emerges from the sea to take his abandoned child for a McDonald’s meal. The staff sigh as they fill a barrel-sized paper cup with water for Tovey to slosh in, used to the routine. Kirby, glaring, orders the Filet-O-Fish. No salt.

Just had a doctor interrogate the autism diagnosis on my records due to the ‘high levels of emotional empathy’ observed during our consultation. He then suggested that being a writer and autistic was, in his mind, highly unlikely. Sorry, lads…but am I in the wrong century?

Said levels of emotional empathy were wearing pretty thin by this point. Silly me, forgetting to be a twat throughout the appointment

If you actually want to reduce #suicide, start by reducing shame. Debt. Sanctions. Food insecurity. Poverty wages. These aren’t “pressures.” They are engineered despair. No amount of awareness ribbons can offset the impact of policymaking built on humiliation.

Just smiled at a new mum in the supermarket with her week-old baby. She smiled and nodded back, initially in solidarity, then realised I was cradling a two pack of flame baked naan breads

A pumpkin just feels like a lot of unnecessary effort, to me. Why must I scoop out this stubborn flesh with a tablespoon?? I signed up to carve a silly window decoration, not perform complex neurosurgery on a gourd

I feel like when you receive a new mental health diagnosis it should be presented like an award, and you should get to stand up and do a BAFTA style acceptance speech in front of your community team

An article I wrote last year about not really relating to portrayals of autism on screen. Still don’t. I reckon a lot of us don’t. Maybe that’s a show that needs to be made. medium.com/@elsalwilliams/te…

Will always be confused by people who suggest that you ‘ask for help’ during a mental health episode. What does that mean, exactly?
