Dear Taiwo, The argument that men and women have no business being friends is one I fundamentally & unequivocally disagree with.🤌 Are we suggesting that the only meaningful connection a man and a woman can establish is romantic or sexual? 🤷‍♂️ Human relationships are far more complex than sexual attraction. This is because often times people connect through shared values, intellectual compatibility,professional interests,mutual respect,humour and common experiences. The fact that “two people are capable of being attracted to each other does not automatically mean attraction must exist between them”..👌 By that logic,we would have to question almost every meaningful interaction between men and women outside romantic relationships. I personally believe the problem is not friendship between men and women; “IT IS THE INABILITY OF SOME PEOPLE TO ESTABLISH BOUNDARIES, COMMUNICATE INTENTIONS HONESTLY AND EXERCISE EMOTIONAL DISCIPLINE.” Being in a relationship does not mean you suddenly lose the ability to appreciate,respect or maintain healthy friendships with other people of the opposite sex. We need to stop projecting our personal insecurities,experiences and inability to maintain boundaries onto everybody else’s relationships. Attraction is human,but self-control is also human. The existence of sexual tension in some friendships does not invalidate the possibility of genuine platonic friendships. Not every man who is kind to a woman wants to sleep with her,and not every woman who enjoys a man’s company is romantically interested in him. Emotional maturity is knowing the difference.
